And I am a bit worried, Harvey cat is 15 and needs about 6 teeth out, during the examination vet told us about this problem TBH we didn't know he had this as he is a very active cat (just chased his mum round the kitchen), but I do know he has some pain and is finding it difficult to eat, but vet has warned us he might not come out of the op, hopefully they are just giving us worse case scenario so we are going ahead, but would welcome any input from people who have had the same issues - picture of my beautiful boy

Oh how worrying! No experience, but I hope your lovely boy comes through the surgery OK.

we had exactly the same last week it was harrowing - no choice but to go ahead though, take the risk or put our girl to sleep due to dental pain....

She is absolutely fine. I hope yours will be too. Either way, you are making the right decision going ahead. xx

Did your vet take pre anaesthetic bloods, I assume due to Harvey's age he will be on fluids, did your vet mention this also as that's what would happen at my workplace.

He'll be very closely monitored throughout and also when he's coming round. A sore mouth is awful for them to cope with.

I hope Harvey has a speedy recovery xx

Just wishing Harvey (and you) best wishes for tomorrow. X

I discovered by accident, just before my cat had a dental, that her murmur was actually grade 4. (When if asked previously about it, I'd been told we don't talk about grades!) She had the surgery and was ok. Also discovered her heart was enlarged and it turned out to be severe HCM. Cardiologist was not pleased that the vet had gone ahead without a scan.

Thinking of you and your beautiful boy today x

My cat was 17 when she had teeth removed. She had a heart murmur and even on the day of surgery they phoned to point out it was risky. I didn't want her to live in pain, so decided it was best for her to keep her comfortable even despite the risk.

My vets were great, I got a phone call to let me know they'd had to delay surgery for an emergency, but then a call in the afternoon to say she was coming around and I could collect her end of day. As she was elderly with an ongoing health problem (not associated with her heart), they checked her the next day and her heart was the same as before.

Hope it goes well.

OP how did Harvey get on? I hope all is well. It's strange that they told you he could have breakfast. All vets in my area say starve from 8pm/9pm the night before. Full access to water is allowed. Its a vomiting risk, just like when we get an operation/anaesthetic.

Nimbostratus100 · 17/01/2023 16:40

popping in for an update, fingers crossed x

CopperMaran · 17/01/2023 17:45

At our vets they do pre op bloods and extra monitoring and support during the procedure in these types of circumstances. Hope it went well.

Oldsu · 17/01/2023 18:28

I have only just seen your thread, but am very happy that Harvey is back home and all went well :)

DomesticShortHair · 17/01/2023 20:56

I’m so pleased. Thanks for letting us know, I’ve been thinking about him today. Extra treats for Harvey tonight. And a glass of wine for you too, if that’s your thing. X
