Dry cat food for dental health recommendations

At a recent vet visit, the vet pointed out a bit of tartar build up on 7yo cat's teeth. Nothing too bad now but obvs don't want it to get any worse. Vet recommended feeding dry food. (I currently feed mainly wet with a bit of Thrive dry food thrown in. )

I'm reluctant to feed dry only as he's so prone to weight gain and also prefer him to have a high meat diet. Also the thrive kibble is so small he just swallows it whole so I don't think it's helping with teeth at all.

Vet recommended hills dental plan as part of a mixed wet/dry diet. apparently it's a bigger kibble so they have to chew. I have my reservations about this though as ingredient list doesn't look great.

Can anyone recommend a good quality dental health dry food, preferably grain free?

Any other experience of dealing with dental issues in cats would be great.

Thanks!

I feed mine a mix of Royal Canin oral care and indoor cat dry food, with half a pouch of good quality wet food twice a day.

Royal Canin isn’t grain free, but it does seem to help her teeth and her weight hasn’t changed in years.

Our cat has had Sanabelle Dental for about 3 years. He had real really sore gums and had to have his teeth cleaned under anaesthetic due to an infection he had as a kitten. The vet thought she'd need to see him regularly with teeth issues but (touch wood!) he hasn't had any problems since. https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/drycattfood/sanabelle/sanabellespeciallnutrition/99025

Vets are often tasked with pushing Hills. Do they sell it? Ours carries Royal Canin which surprise surprise they also “recommend”.

I like James Wellbeloved but generally feed more wet food than dry.

My two love Canagan, which is grain free, they share a portion of wet food morning and evening, and we leave Canagan dry down all the time, you hear them crunching away on it. They are ten years old and their teeth have always had a clean bill of health at their vet checks.

I was advised to use plaque off powder on my cats teeth. It can go in wet foods. My two weren't keen!

Also recommend Canagan, my cat loves it!

Ours have applaws, which they seem to like. Kibble pieces arent too small so they do crunch on them
