My cat is fat

My 6 year old cat went missing for three weeks in June this year, when he returned he was skinny, matted and full of fleas and ticks. He has always been an active outdoor cat, but since his return he just isn't interested in going out anymore, he just snuggles on the sofa asleep all day.

We feed him the same as before he went missing, one pouch of wet food a day plus a scoop of biscuits (he is a large Siberian). I've tried getting some toys to encourage exercise but no luck so far, he merely lazily swipes a paw if they're within reach.

Any suggestions for toys your cats have enjoyed?

He could have been badly upset when he went missing and just doesn’t want to leave the house.

seriously he went through a bad patch there….he’s a fighting machine now 😭❤️

he really is so scrummy and I swear after years of daft pedigrees he’s the most intelligent cat I’ve ever met, he understands words and waits for me to come home from work -I’m biased of course but I do adore him so much ❤️

Could you put something on the top of the stairs for him to chase & then when he is up throw it downstairs? 30 minutes twice a day would help.

He is extremely gorgeous and when I stuff my face in his fur he smells like laundry but that’s due to him spending most of his life snoozing on my bed…..🥰 all cats are beautiful…..do you have a cat ? 😻

@TwoMonthsOff I do! He's a large chunk of snuggly kittiness. He also smells of laundry...for the same reason! He's in my bed for longer each day than I am.

Meant to add my new boy looks quite svelte, but he weighs in at a hefty 5.5 k, - it’s a bit of a shock when you pick him up, and I have to ask him to move if he lies on me in the wrong places because I am attached to breathing - anyway he was at the vet getting his last jabs and I warned the vet that he was chunky, she said she found a lot of UK cats on the chubby side, and that at home ( Poland) nearly all the cats are much smaller. So it’s clearly something genetic ………UK cats are big boned through hundreds of years of island based breeding 😁not fat at all.

I bet on Poland they are fed on scraps, not processed cat food.

I think it is ‘cats being sensible’ time of year, bulk up, sleep, keep warm and get ready for action when it gets a bit warmer, we all know how smart they are 😻

Following this.... I have a fat girl and a skinny boy, the DC tell me off for fat shaming her but she really is large. She's only 3. She does go out a bit and climb the odd tree but doesn't roam like he does. She also loves dry food whereas he prefers the wet so think she normally finishes his. I'm overdue a vet trip but know they're going to say she needs to go on a diet.

I'm going to try giving them just wet in the morning and just dry at night, and weigh the dry.
