Do you wipe the floor where your cat eats every day? Is my girl just a messy eater?

Is daily floor wiping just a part of living with a cat?

I don't know anything about cats but I wish I just had to wipe the floor where my dogs were. I have 3 who love to run around in mud so it's multiple daily floor sweeping, mopping and wiping down of all the cabinets and appliances in the kitchen🤦‍♀️😂

whatisforteamum · 26/12/2022 06:49

Messy eater or perhaps dental issues.
I read cats tilt there heads when they have mouth issues.
Or the dish sides are too deep. They don't like their whiskers touching the bowl hence I don't use a pet dish.

Ilovehamandtoast · 26/12/2022 06:50

I have 2 mats, 2 bowls of dry food and 2 fresh food bowls which are washed every use. I hoover round when they make a mess. The mats are washable so we keep those clean too

Caspianberg · 26/12/2022 06:51

Yes. Mine have dry food available 24/7, but I now only give them wet food in the evening as they weren’t eating it.

So the floor is clear and clean at 8pm when plate goes down, and looks like a food tornado by morning. I have watched and one definitely just gets food in his mouth then drops it on the floor to eat half the time. So deeper bowls made no difference.

Athenen0ctua · 26/12/2022 06:51

Mine have a mat so I wipe that

Caspianberg · 26/12/2022 06:52

Ours eat off plates rather than bowls due to the whiskers thing. But when I tried deep bowls a few days they were just as messy

BoxOfCats · 26/12/2022 06:52

I have a big plastic mat under their wet food dish which gets washed regularly. Their dry food bowl is a special "no spill" design - it has a deep edge all around the bowl so that if biscuits fall out they just sit inside the rim.

I do have a mat but she gets the floor around the mat dirty too. I'll try a flat plate and see if it helps.

Mine was very messy - she liked to drag chunks of food out of the bowl onto the floor and eat from the floor, so I bought a little tray to put the bowls on, thinking I would just wash that, rather than constantly mopping wooden floor.

Tray has remained pristine, and she now eats decorously from the bowl. I think she didn’t like the bowl sliding around on the floor, but the tray holds it still.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 26/12/2022 14:28

I use little plastic mats and wipe those clean every day. They tend to throw kibble and bits of jelly around.

Caterina99 · 26/12/2022 14:34

Mine has her plates on a tray so I just clean that once a week ish. But she’s actually a pretty tidy eater compared to my mum’s cat who drags the food out of the bowl to eat it and makes a huge mess.

We do have very shallow food bowls so I wonder if that helps

planefullofotters · 26/12/2022 14:36

Big mat with newspaper round it here.

EspeciallyD · 26/12/2022 14:39

Ours used to make a right mess when they had Felix pouches, they would drag the contents out onto the mat or floor and splatter it everywhere, up walls etc. Then we switched them to a non jelly wet food and now there's no mess to speak of, it is so much better. The Felix go used to set like concrete if you didn't wipe it up immediately.

karmalama · 26/12/2022 15:00

I run a Cattery, most cats are super clean eaters but a few are the messiest things ever. Usually the flat faced ones, but some just seem to love dragging bits of food to the carpet area to eat .

bellac11 · 26/12/2022 15:03

Ours is messy. She carries the food out of the bowls, away from her tray all over the house, then eats it, drops bit and they stay nice and crunchy for me to put my feet in while walking barefoot in the house

I cant stand washing the floor so I wait until the bits are crunchy and give it a quick hoover, need to do it today in fact.

She yowls really loudly when she does this as if she is bringing it to her imaginary kittens

Beamur · 26/12/2022 15:09

Mine are pointy faced cats and one is a very messy ester. She seems to take a mouthful then shakes it if it isn't quite right.
I feed on trays and wash them daily.

Nextlevelnonsense · 26/12/2022 15:30

@Beamur - I have a pointy faced boy too - same issues. My vet said he has a 'disabled mouth'. I thought that was a bit harsh, poor chap.

He eats mainly dry food, but he sends it everywhere. Perfectly healthy though.

RaisinRainbow · 26/12/2022 15:35

I have a messy 9 month kitten who likes to drag his food out of the bowl. Solution: lay a sheet of kitchen roll underneath.

torthecatlady · 26/12/2022 15:41

Both of mine are messy, but the younger of the two is considerably more messy.

ShowOfHands · 26/12/2022 15:52

I had this issue until I switched to a wide dog bowl with deepish sides. It's heavy and doesn't move, wide enough that her whiskers don't touch it and roomy enough that I think she thinks it's similar to the floor. She never makes a mess now.

Oh dear.
I just told my cat this and she gave me a very unimpressed look.

TinfoilTwat · 26/12/2022 18:27

Yes, I think she's dragging the wet food out of her bowl to eat it from the floor. I put kitchen roll down but she drags it off the kitchen roll!
She doesn't have a particularly flat or pointy face.
I've switched to a plate. Let's see if that helps.

One of mine is a really clean eater, but the other two pick the food out of their bowls and eat it off the floor 🙄

Ilovehamandtoast · 27/12/2022 04:32

I was aware of whisker fatigue but never thought about cats face shape!! 😺

gonna have to look into that.

We have shallow dishes for wet food - Comsmart Stainless Steel Pet Cat... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0725P81QD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

And actually use old takeaway tubs for the dry food. I've cat is very particular about whisker fatigue so this just works.

Love learning about these amazing creatures
