Cats sitting where you don’t want them to!

Is this a typical cat thing or just my cat… whenever we play a game or do a jigsaw or things like that she comes and sits right on top of it. She also tries to sit on my laptop keyboard when I’m working from home. It’s infuriating! I try and move her away but she really won’t get the hint and is very persistent. Can any cat psychology experts shed any light on this?

My colleagues at work love it when they spot a cat tail on my teams call, and sometimes they're doing cat yoga behind me on the cat tree 😹😻 ... resistance is futile!

This is so funny. It reminds me of my beloved old boy who's passed on now. He became a demon mouser in his last year of life, he'd bring them in live from outdoors and generously let go of them in the bedroom for me. I had to become a dab-hand at mouse-behind-the-chest-of-drawers-removal at 3am repeatedly. Also, after a lifetime of never going on the kitchen worktops, he decided that was his territory in his last year. I hated the idea of cat-poo-tray paws on my worktops and I had to deploy a squirty bottle. I miss him 😥

He also enjoyed jigsaw sitting... Grin

Welcome to the wonderful world of cats.

Remember "Dogs have owners, cats have staff" 😁

Mine is very helpful. Has sent an email I was typing, 'Dear X thank you for your email mntihgdawjjdcv' <send> has walked dirty paw prints over receipts I had to scan, thankfully the office saw the funny side. This morning he even managed to poo on the floor whilst inside his very large tray. He's just an all round helpful little bastard poppet.

Rosie always bombs my Zoom language class. Every. Single. Time. Full on miaowing at the camera then turns round and displays her bumhole 🙀 Then sits on my book, chews the headphone cable and knocks the pen out of my hand 😕

Cats are genetically engineered to sit on jigsaws. You are being v v v unreasonable to expect otherwise ....and they love to play with Christmas decorations too ...

I love how he's curled his little arms up underneath him 🥰

Sorry, that last message was for toddlerteaplease

Ours likes to sit on dh's pillow - at 5am when dh is very much still using it.

Lenax · 30/11/2022 18:06

Because they love you and want to get involved with everything you do. My cat will sprawl himself over any clothes I put down to take pictures of for Vinted, or sit on my laptop/keyboard/notepad when I am WFH.

Yep. Everything
Magnets for my lovely cat to “help” me with were:

  • the laptop keyboard
  • any WFH paperwork
  • me trying to read a newspaper (I’d get the sports section, which I didn’t want, out ready for her to crunch about in and curl up on in my lap, while I read the other sections over the top of her)
  • as previous posters have said, looking at a map or unrolling wrapping paper - cat would instantly sit and roll around unhelpfully
  • she was a menace around bed clothes being changed; would instantly come and try to control the whole thing, occasionally getting very cross

I miss her.

Exactly this. A lot of the little ‘mildly annoying’ cat things that they do are the little things that you really miss when they’re gone- I remember my first stress-free duvet cover change after I lost my little lad, and I would have done anything to have had him getting inside it mid-swap.

BigEggg · 30/11/2022 18:32

I thought Dcat liked the heat off my laptop when he would helpfully sit on my keyboard but since I saw him climb into a box of a gameboard that the whole family was engrossed in, look us all one by one in the eye and thens print off leaving us a very nice pooey present it told us all we needed to know. I'm not convinced it looked like litter tray I think he just didn't want any competition (on his own terms of course!)

He would also helpfully wake me up at 4am in case I overslept. Not hungry, doesn't want a cuddle, doesn't need anything, just wants me to wake up. Purrrfectly reasonable kitty!

I have to keep a chair by my computer, otherwise I’ll have cats insisting on sitting in my chair. Cat Three loves and sits there as soon as I sit down. Cat One still sometimes sits on the mouse and pushes me aside until I get up.
Cat Two just sits in front of the screen on the keyboard.

Cats sitting where don't want them to is basically cat 101.

It's more Cat than mousing.

I grew up learning to do my homework around my cat :D

Psychologically speaking, they're kind of evolutionarily programmed to want to sit in enclosed spaces. So a square of paper, or a jigsaw, or laptop is perfect.

Bonus points if it's right in your face.

Grand prize if it prevents you doing what you need to.

Form a piece of string into a circle or square on the floor, cat will sit in it everytime.

Here is my cat helping me make curtains.

Wish I'd thought of that last time I was laying out fabric for curtains.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/12/2022 10:31

Well someone had to make those curtains while your clearly messing with your phone @JoanOgden
