If you only scoop out used bits of cat litter, what do you put them in for the bin?

Hi all,
very excited to be adopting a cat tomorrow. Hopefully have all the stuff ready. Just thinking about the litter tray. I believe it's ok to scoop out clumps or solids on some days and not do a full litter change every day? When I was growing up and we had a cat, my parents used carrier bags for this but obviously these are much rarer now so wondering what people do? Are dog poo bags too small to use with a scoop etc? I am quite clumsy!

I use dog poo bags! Enjoy your new cat!

nappy bags

TeenDivided · 20/11/2022 08:07

We just put them straight into our kitchen bin. We slipped poo down the sides so it wasn't at the top and didn't smell. The clumpy bits were fine too. Kitchen bin emptied twice a week.

I used flushable composting cat litter when ours were kittens. Scooped and flushed.
Then main litter tray empty from ‘bits’ would get put on the compost when changed.

Nappy sacks to go in a black bin bag. I thought personal waste was supposed to be double wrapped before it goes in the dustbin?

Plump82 · 20/11/2022 08:16

I used small pedal bin, bin bags.

AllotmentTime · 20/11/2022 08:18

Biodegradable dog poop bags.

What I found after a lot of googling: contrary to instinct it’s not a good idea to flush. Cats can carry toxoplasmosis and our sewage system is not designed to treat for that, so their waste can end up damaging wildlife (esp otters) if it gets flushed.

Tyrozet · 20/11/2022 08:22

I use flushable litter and the tray is in the bathroom so literally just scoop it straight into the toilet.

Tyrozet · 20/11/2022 08:24

X-post @AllotmentTime - I didn't realise this. I will need to re-think my process! Thanks.

You could get the compostable food bin bags, they are probably a bit bigger than dog poo bags

Pepperama · 20/11/2022 08:28

Just scoop it into small biodegradable bin bags and into general waste rather than compost because of the toxiplasmosis risk

QuebecBagnet · 20/11/2022 08:28

I buy carrier bags in packs of a few hundred from Amazon.

Sausagedoggy · 20/11/2022 08:30

Biodegradable dog poo bags.

SquirrelSoShiny · 20/11/2022 08:30

Another one using composting dog poo bags. It works really well.

mincen · 20/11/2022 08:31

Biodegradable dog poo bags then in to the outside wheelie bin

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2022 08:31

Biodegradable dog poo bag.

GrubzUp · 20/11/2022 08:34

Poos loose in the kitchen bin? Yuck!

I scoop into nappy sacks and then take it straight into the dustbin outside. Our waste here in London is incinerated so I don't see the point in using expensive compostable bags.

Caspianberg · 20/11/2022 08:41

@AllotmentTime - it must depend on where you live. I asked our water waste management as they were doing maintenance nearby, and they said it’s fine to flush any animal waste as the system and it was preferable to it going to landfill

spanieleyes · 20/11/2022 08:42

I use a nappybin- the ones with the biodegradable cassettes- and these then go in the dustbin bags- so double wrapped and no smell.

KonTikki · 20/11/2022 08:44

Thankyou for being a considerate cat owner.
My neighbour refuses to use cat litter 'cos he has 3 cats and doesn't want the mess. He leaves them to poop all over his neighbours gardens instead.
I find his attitude and respect for us to be appalling.

TheVanguardSix · 20/11/2022 08:47

My cats no longer use litter trays but when they did, we used our dog’s poo bags and popped them in a small plastic bin with a lid which we keep outside in the garden, just by our kitchen door. We still use it when the dog occasionally poos in the garden.

But it's not just animal waste - the litter itself can get stuck in pipes and cause blockages.

You should never flush any used litter down the toilet, no matter what it says on the packaging.

medicatedgift · 20/11/2022 09:04

I use dog poo bags and put in the general bin.

EspeciallyD · 20/11/2022 09:05

Biodegradable dog poo bags here too, they are easily wide enough for our scoop

Caspianberg · 20/11/2022 09:06

@thelobsterquadrille - cats best 100% doesn’t. I tried some in a glass of water and it just broke down into nothing basically. It’s sawdust pellets I think.
And I don’t mean the whole tray, just the bit stuck to poop you scoop out.
