If you only scoop out used bits of cat litter, what do you put them in for the bin?

Hi all,
very excited to be adopting a cat tomorrow. Hopefully have all the stuff ready. Just thinking about the litter tray. I believe it's ok to scoop out clumps or solids on some days and not do a full litter change every day? When I was growing up and we had a cat, my parents used carrier bags for this but obviously these are much rarer now so wondering what people do? Are dog poo bags too small to use with a scoop etc? I am quite clumsy!

In Europe. I have no idea then. I asked the actual head of town council water supply. Anyway, moot point now as as we have a little tray but ours won’t use it anymore so it’s just for emergencies
If I was in area without option, I guess I would wrap in paper as best option

I try to re-use small plastic bags that have come into the house for other reasons - bread bags, packaging, the biodegradable bags our supermarket uses for fruit and veg.
@Caspianberg - interesting that you’re allowed to flush cat poop and degradable litter, if you’re in the country I think you are. I‘m in a neighbouring country and it’s a huge no-no here. On top of that, our cat hates the pellets and we found that Cat‘s Best stank of pee very quickly. It’s a pity, I would rather use them in principle, just not to flush down the loo.

I agree that I use those as well - I just have a supply of dog poo bags as a backup.

Like others we use biodegradable dog poo bags. We also bought a cat litter bin from Amazon for about £50, with a deodorising pad at the top to stop it stinking so much. Enjoy your new kitty!

Brown paper bags (buy in bulk from Amazon).

Thanks so much for all the replies.
She's used to wood litter at the shelter so we are carrying that on for now.
I'm nervous (get anxious about responsibility!) but excited!

I re-use any empty plastic bags as much as possible - bread bags, frozen peas/oven chips bags, crumpet bags etc. Keep them in a box ready to use.

hi, just buy a plastic scoop, scoop up the poop, slide into a poo bag, tie the top and put in your general waste bin.

Please DO NOT flush into the sewers - def not a good thing as per other posters.

Also, please don't just put in your kitchen bin without even putting it in a poo bag - cat poo can seriously stink, and also, that's just really unhygienic.

if a kitten, advised not to use the clumping litter.

We just put them straight into our kitchen bin. We slipped poo down the sides so it wasn't at the top and didn't smell. The clumpy bits were fine too. Kitchen bin emptied twice a week.

Sorry but that is grim!
and emptied twice a week? 🤮

Biodegradable dog poop bags.

What I found after a lot of googling: contrary to instinct it’s not a good idea to flush. Cats can carry toxoplasmosis and our sewage system is not designed to treat for that, so their waste can end up damaging wildlife (esp otters) if it gets flushed.

This.

Dog poo bags and I put them in an outside bin, not the bin in the house or they smell.

The cheapest nappy bags. Currently Sainsburys basics. Plastic waste sadly but you could buy biodegradable poo bags I guess

Pets at home - 1.50 for 200 biodegradable dog bags.

Unicorn34 · 07/12/2022 20:40

Nappy sacks but not really cheap ones - Tesco and/or Sainsburys are the ones I use but they go straight into the dustbin as they smell!

DuchessOfSausage · 07/12/2022 20:46

Not RTFT but do not put cat poo or cat litter in the loo, because of the toxoplasmosis risk.
Not environmentally friendly but I use thin cheap disposable gloves, or if I have any, old newspaper pieces to scoop it and wrap it.

I have a 'cat loo' composting bin, the compost is not used for growing food, and I use wood or fuller's earth cat litter.
