If you only scoop out used bits of cat litter, what do you put them in for the bin?

Hi all,
very excited to be adopting a cat tomorrow. Hopefully have all the stuff ready. Just thinking about the litter tray. I believe it's ok to scoop out clumps or solids on some days and not do a full litter change every day? When I was growing up and we had a cat, my parents used carrier bags for this but obviously these are much rarer now so wondering what people do? Are dog poo bags too small to use with a scoop etc? I am quite clumsy!

I have a Litter Locker. You can buy their refill plastic bags but I use individual pedal bin liners which last about a week with my cats (as it’s much cheaper).

@thelobsterquadrille - cats best 100% doesn’t. I tried some in a glass of water and it just broke down into nothing basically. It’s sawdust pellets I think.
And I don’t mean the whole tray, just the bit stuck to poop you scoop out.

You still shouldn't be flushing cat poo or litter down the toilet 😬

My mum used to wrap in newspaper. We'd get loads of free ones so she used those.

KateBalesCardi · 20/11/2022 10:22

I use newspaper, my parents still get the paper delivered and give me the old ones so I always have them handy.

Caspianberg · 20/11/2022 10:25

@thelobsterquadrille - why? It’s what the council and water waste tell us to do here. It’s literally sent out each year with recycling instructions. Our black bin equivalent is only every 6 weeks, and it’s 35+ all summer. Can you imagine the stench after 6 weeks? It’s why I used reusable nappies and wipes also.
You only can’t flush cat poop if your council scrimps on town water filter system.

I compost our cat litter.
Thankfully not used much because my cats have almost constant access to outside and have their own toilets in my garden which keep the neighbours happy.

EvilRingahBitch · 20/11/2022 10:29

I use dog poo bags - I pick poo up with them like I would a dog poo, but my litter doesn't clump so I only need a small bag. If you use clumping litter then there are larger size dog poo bags you can get.

Beamur · 20/11/2022 10:32

Compostable poo bags, which I put in a bucket outside and then when I fully empty the tray, I put the small bags in there too and out the lot in a Wheely bin.

Biodegradable dog poo bags then in to the outside wheelie bin

Same here.

I've always read never to compost the waste of any creature that eats meat.

I am guessing you are in Australia @Caspianberg ?

Here in the UK our water is treated in a different way and absolutely does not kill off the Toxoplasmosis parasites.

afaloren · 20/11/2022 10:45

We have a litter genie which seals it into bags.

Toomanysleepycats · 20/11/2022 10:48

You could wrap it in paper but if that would normally go in the recycling bin, how about using things like empty frozen food bags, plastic packaging from loo roll and kitchen roll. It’s packaging that’s going in the bin anyway.

healthadvice123 · 20/11/2022 10:51

I can't believe they do flushable litter as your not supposed to put animal pooh in sewarage systems

healthadvice123 · 20/11/2022 10:53

@Caspianberg so you asked just a worker who possibly had no idea ?

healthadvice123 · 20/11/2022 10:53

@Caspianberg are you in the uk ?

healthadvice123 · 20/11/2022 10:54

@Caspianberg because the advice in the uk is not the same

My cats only pee in their litter tray- they poop in their garden toilets.

Emmamoo89 · 20/11/2022 10:56

Nappy bags

gingercat02 · 20/11/2022 10:57

The cheapest nappy bags. Currently Sainsburys basics. Plastic waste sadly but you could buy biodegradable poo bags I guess

cobblers123 · 20/11/2022 11:00

I use doggy poo bags but despite spending a lot of money on an outside shelter (it's a large dog kennel, heavy duty plastic and perfect for him) for his tray and buying best quality cat litter, he still goes down the garden and digs up my borders to go.

If he does use the tray I just bag it up and put in the kitchen bin, I couldn't drop a poo into the bin without bagging it as he's a bit of a stinker.

Floralnomad · 20/11/2022 11:01

When I scoop poop / wees for my sons cats I don’t use a scoop I just put my hand in a dog poo bag ( biodegradable ) / nappy sack and pick it up like I would if I was picking up a dog poo . Clumping litter is your friend for this method . Using a scoop would just add to the things that need washing / cleaning . I then tie up the bag and put it in the cat waste bin outside .

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 20/11/2022 11:08

I try to re-use small plastic bags that have come into the house for other reasons - bread bags, packaging, the biodegradable bags our supermarket uses for fruit and veg.
@Caspianberg - interesting that you’re allowed to flush cat poop and degradable litter, if you’re in the country I think you are. I‘m in a neighbouring country and it’s a huge no-no here. On top of that, our cat hates the pellets and we found that Cat‘s Best stank of pee very quickly. It’s a pity, I would rather use them in principle, just not to flush down the loo.

RandomMess · 20/11/2022 11:25

I use sieve trays with wood pellets.

Poo goes in a dog poo bag. The sawdust I tip once a week into a black bin liner which I store in the shed, after several weeks that goes in the bin too.
