Our feral kitten is spicey, can we tame him!

We got a feral kitten yesterday and he's a spicey one! He was 1 of 8 kittens brought to a stables by his mum. They've had some interaction with humans and they have been stroked lightly while they have been eating before he came to us. At the moment he's in our downstairs loo (fairly roomy) with litter tray, food, carrier etc all in with him. He is petrified and hiding in his carrier. He hasn't eaten or been in his litter tray and its been 20 hours. I'm borrowing a dog crate and going to put him in there in our main lounge so he gets used to us but feels safe in there for now. Any tips on how to win him round or try to reassure him we'll be nice to him! Or have we made a massive mistake 🤔

Time time time! From what you've said it's been less than 24 hours. They're also all different, we've had feral cats before at work. First pair were a father and daughter (both neutered) after 3 weeks in a crate we let them out. Daughter disappeared after 2 days and now lives over the road, father literally became a dog in cat form and would follow you everywhere (sadly he got hit by a car a few years later and was killed). Second pair we had, it's been a year and although they'll come to be fed etc we still can't touch them 🤷‍♀️

Time, patience and food. Mainly food.

I've got him purring and rolling over liking tickles. I've hand fed him that gross tuna cream in a tube they love. We're getting there 🐱

Yep, hand feeding and constant talking to them! Picture please ☺️ I love spicy kittens.

TiddyTidTwo · 26/09/2022 18:07

YABVU not posting pics! Wink

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/09/2022 18:07

You mean he’s getting there! Gross tubes of tuna more expensive than champagne for life now.

Yes, neighbours had such a kitten and it was totally wild. I trapped it in a proper cat trap and when I opened the trap in our upstairs bathroom it literally ran up the wall, hit the ceiling, bounced off dh’s head and nearly went out the tiny window!

so they had a dog crate in their front room and it took weeks and weeks but cat is as soft as anything now.

I love him.

Allergictoironing · 26/09/2022 18:53

My ex-ferals were young adults when they came home, and it took days before I even caught sight of them, 6 months before I could touch the bolder one & a year for the other one. They are still convinced anybody else in the house is a terrible monster in disguise, but I have hours of cuddles with them finally.

What shall we call him, well we think he's a him! He has a marking on his head that has been likened to something by several people, but we don't care! 😳

Our beautiful Ozzie came to us tiny, hissing and spitting. Took a few months to settle but was always wary of strangers. We were always surprised if he came to sit our lap! Had definite routines and only liked to use a certain door to come and go. Gorgeous cat with thick velvet fur, miss his ‘boofs’. So worth it. Enjoy your lovely little one!

That marking looks like an arrow head. Is he fast? How about arrow?

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/09/2022 21:15

“He’s not happy” are they ever? 😸 it’s like being in an abusive relationship sometimes. Mines asking for more chicken. She has chicken. Still I have a little phantom follow me to the kitchen.

ThisShipIsSinking · 26/09/2022 21:19

He is so lovely, my two white cats were called Frosty and Misty, you have to mind their ears and noses in the summer, l used to rub sunbock on mine,as those areas on white cats are prone to getting sunburn which can then turn cancerous.

iloveeverykindofcat · 27/09/2022 14:07

@Fluffycloudland77 my spicy rescue cat punches me in the face. No claws: a direct punch. Usually directly after or before expressing her great love and affection for me.

He is very sweet and brave having a go on the furniture.

OldTinHat · 28/09/2022 23:44

I don't like cats. But I love this one!

And he has a name, he's Mr Spicey, you can't change it now!
