Argh! Cat weeing out of the litter tray …

We’re currently mid house move - we couldn’t get the dates for selling and buying aligned so decided to rent an Airbnb house for a month. Our cat (former feral street cat from Dubai) has taken everything in his stride.
However, at our old house he hardly ever used a litter tray as he preferred to toilet at the back of the garden. Here , despite happily exploring his new (temporary) territory, he won’t wee or poo outside but comes rushing in to use the litter tray and then zips outside again 🤷‍♀️.

Which would be fine apart from he’s started teetering in the edge of the tray when he wees, meaning that not all the wee goes into the tray.. I’ve been putting puppy training pads underneath the tray but the wee just spills over the top and goes underneath them. The bathroom now stinks of cat wee despite me cleaning regularly with simple solution - does anyone have any ideas to fix this please?

Bigger tray or a top entry one.

Top entry tray with a lid.

It turned out that he didn’t like putting his paws in the cheapo cat litter I’d got from the supermarket … we got the expensive stuff that he’s used to and he’s been fine … who’d have thought an ex-street cat would be such a princess 🤦‍♀️
