Cat has oral cancer when to say goodbye.

My little boy is 6 he had an abscess which was related to a tumour. He was drooling and had foul breath. He still is drooling he's on metacam but still eating playing and full of cuddles. I feel terribly guilty he's an amputee, now this he's such a lovely friendly cat the best. There's no treatment which would give him a good quality of life.

I'm wondering when is best to let my little boy go?

I think the best answer to this question is that you will know. Pets have their way of telling us when it's time and you just know I don't know how else to describe it!
So sorry for you and your beautiful cat though. He looks lovely

Oh poor little chap, Sad he’s a handsome boy.

I think you just have to take it day by day, and they always say better a day too soon than a day too late, as hard as that is for us.

If it’s affecting his eating he will soon let you know if he’s not happy, so just give him lots of cuddles and take lots of photos of him. He’ll let you know when he’s ready Flowers

We had this with our gorgeous 10 year old ginger boy a few months ago. He had a huge tumour under his tongue and was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. The vet said it could be weeks or months and after about 3 weeks we made the decision to say goodbye. He’s started dribbling more and more and began to look very dishevelled where he was struggling to groom himself. Then he started struggling to eat, it was heartbreaking and I really miss him.

So sorry to hear you will be going through the same, but as previously said you will know when it’s time 💔

I just want to send a virtual hug and say i know exactly how u feel.

My gorgeous boy has started having Twitches. Not to bad at first. Now they have got stronger and every so often his leg will suddenly jerk etc. he is missing things when he jumps. He is still playing and running around. But he defiantly has something brewing in his head ( old boy , heart murmur so not putting him through anything )
My worry is that I miss something or I don’t catch it all before it becomes to late. And I don’t want to do it too early.

It’s awful isn’t it, I’m so sorry.

As long as he’s eating, drinking and playing I’d leave things as they are. When things change, he will let you know he’s had enough.

So sorry to hear, it's just heartbreaking

I'm so sorry, I know it is awful. We had to let go of our cat in July completely out of the blue, and one of the things that made me feel a lot better was as said earlier in the thread, "better a day too early than a day too late". Short term it is horrible, but in the long term you will look back and know you did the right thing. It is not easy to know when it's the right time, but I think you will have a gut feeling when it isn't right to carry on. I wish you all the best.

I'm sorry it's the hardest decision, but as others say, you will know.

We lost both ours the last 2 years, and when I was discussing it with a friend she said 'You have to ask yourself what their tomorrow will be like, and if it's a lot worse than today then it's time'.

Wartywart · 12/09/2022 22:45

You will know. But when this happened to our cat, someone said to me "better a week too early than a day too late" and that is so true.

syntoandtoast · 12/09/2022 22:48

We're in a similar position with a limb tumour in our cat. It's heartbreaking so sending hugs. I don't know when the time will be right either but I'm hoping she will let us know. In the meantime, as many snuggles and treats as possible and take each day as it comes. Flowers
