Is everyone else’s cat being a dick about coming in at night right now?

My girl is being a complete pain. She comes in for dinner and then is out again. Normally she’d be straight in for supper before bed but now she’s being an arse. Last night she sat in next door’s garden knowing that I could see her but couldn’t get her. Now I can’t even find her. Pain in the arse.

Yes, they’re not allowed out once they’ve been fed or we don’t see them until 3am and I need my sleep.

Snailsaresweet · 13/08/2022 08:11

Yes! My younger cat has discovered the Great Outdoors and has become a dirty stop out over the last couple of months. She comes in at the start of the day for breakfast, and at the end of the day for supper and then buggers off again. One of my neighbours enjoys sitting out late at night watching the bats, and she sometimes joins him. She'll be back when the weather turns.

PriamFarrl · 13/08/2022 09:46

Mine came back in after DH went out. She will do anything for him.
I could leave her out all night but I’d worry and she gets into fights. And I think she got bitten by a fox a while ago.

Next door's cat has decided the middle of the road is the best place to hang out at the moment. It's decent traffic calming but slightly illogical, and alarming.

Qwettyiiop · 13/08/2022 10:01

Dcat has decided neighbours garden is the best place to be during the hot weather. She comes in only for food. Last night she even decided she'd have her supper outside thank you very much. Good thing dh is so well trained alert to what she wants.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 13/08/2022 17:15

Mine has to be lured in every night with a lick-e-lix

Beamur · 13/08/2022 17:18

I have to get mine in before it's dark or they simply will not come. They then spend an hour or two arguing with the cat flap.

ArticSaviour · 13/08/2022 17:34

It's cat festival season. Ours pop in once day for food and then fuck off again. Mind you, i know that they use at least one other house on the street as a crash pad so they could be anywhere.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 13/08/2022 17:40

Both of mine are living it t large right now.

We have a cat flap we can set to "in only" but girl cat learned how to open it and get out.

Boy cat watched and after a few weeks he learned how to do it too!

So the only way we can keep them both in now is to wait until they are both in and fully lock it but I'm not waiting up till whenever that is.

They've accidentally managed to lock themselves out too.

I'm hoping they'll spend more time at home in the winter.

Guiltypleasures001 · 13/08/2022 17:51

Our girl jumped out of the sky light window in our bedroom 1st floor
Straight on to concrete. She was fine can't say the same for DH and I

Hence now we can't have any windows open up stairs at night in case she does it again, it's a tad hot at night now ffs

Patio cat giving zero cares

Ooohs sorry yes and won't come in until gone midnight, which is why she jumped out

PriamFarrl · 13/08/2022 18:08

Yep, same here. It’s normally DH that has to deal with her as I’m early to bed but when she really won’t come in, I will go down and she will normally come when I call her.

She really wouldn’t be happy if we went to bed without her but she loves the relative cool of the evenings right now. She’s a crap hunter but enjoys success with the occasional moth😻

Babdoc · 13/08/2022 18:14

Madam has always come in and out at will. She likes to nap in the shade outside on hot days, but splits her nights between sleeping on my bed and going out murdering the local vermin. The heatwave hasn’t changed anything, but I’m in Perthshire and it’s only 26C up here.

AnnaMagnani · 13/08/2022 19:49

@Guiltypleasures001 we shut ourselves in the bedroom so we can have the windows wide open at night + fan on.

Otherwise one cat would be hurling himself out of the window, and the other would be curling up on us for cuddles.

We aren't in favour of the first as he goes out and spends the night fighting, and currently it's too hot for cat cuddles. Silkycat is still mystified why she can't sleep under our duvet FFS.

Papergirl1968 · 13/08/2022 22:14

Yes. Boycat can normally be bribed to come in for food. Girlcat is not motivated by food. Last night I managed to get them both in at about 11.15pm but a few days ago I had set my alarm for 3am to get girlcat in. Tonight they both came in for food at about 8.15pm so I shut the door despite it being boiling hot.
Doesn't always work but I think keeping them a bit hungry till they're in for the night is the best plan.

WaitingForWinter1 · 13/08/2022 22:17

My cat is old, deaf, has only one eye, no fangs, cannot climb any more. He flatly refuses to come in at night lately. I've been getting up throughout the night to see if he's ok (he's been sleeping on a patio chair in the garden). Little sod.

applegrumbles · 13/08/2022 22:17

DCat has decided that as people keep going in and out of the sliding French doors, he is no longer interested in coming in via his catflap (in the front door) and will instead wait outside the back every time he wants to come in.

He also doesn’t like to go out via the catflap and prefers to summon the staff to open it.

We are trying not to indulge any of this but it’s not going well!

PriamFarrl · 13/08/2022 23:05

I think my girl must be on MN as she trotted in at 9.30.

I've been shouting for my 8 month old kitten for 2 hours. She's gone rogue.
The other one as you can see in the pic is trying to keep me as warm as possible by covering as much of my body with herself as possible. I'm going to die of heat stroke soon.

My madam has been dining Al fresco on the patio all summer and sleeping out in this heat all day and night. She’s normally quite clever but not so much these days.
