Male cats vs female cats, which are more affectionate?

Lorddenning1 · 25/06/2022 21:32

I have had 2 males cats before, first one was a rescue and didn't really have time for me but cuddled my other half. Second male had wobbly cat syndrome and was a mummies boy.
I now have 2 females and I always thought they were aloof and not affectionate, but I was wrong, Bella is a snuggle bug and loves cuddles, all the time and she is so friendly and likes everyone. Rosie ignored us all the time and would run away from us, however other the last couple of months she is now my best friend, she comes in and chills with me in the couch, loves cuddles and she likes it when I hold her paw.
So I would say based on the cats I have had, females are more loving.
What's everyone else experiences?

There's no difference imo. They're all individuals.

I think it depends on the individual cat. I’ve three girls and a boy. Our oldest girl (13) is aloof and interacts only on her terms, has never sat on a lap. Second oldest (12) is the most affectionate of the four, she will lie across my neck in bed, doesn’t sit on laps but likes to sit between me and my husband on the sofa. Interestingly, considering the socialisation aspect, she lived in an outdoor pen for the first eight years of her life so being in a family home was new to her. Seeing her now and how much she loves her creature comforts and being around us, I think about how sad her life must’ve been for those eight years.

our youngest two, coming up to two years old, are affectionate when they want to be. The boy (half Siamese) will sit on my husband’s lap but not often mine. The girl (British shorthair) will sit next to us but never for very long, though she does sleep on my feet.

I would have said male cats are more affectionate. I have always found them more chilled and I preferred them to female cats, but since my lovely boy passed over last year. I have been adopted by 3 female cats (a stray mother cat and her 2 babies) and they are very sweet. It's lovely to see how they care for each other and have accepted me into their little family.

Nearly all the pets I've had have been male except 2 female rats, they were skittish and didn't like to be held. All my other pets cats, rabbit, gerbils, hamster and other rats have been male and they were cuddly. Victoria

I wasn't sure what my African Land snail was but I called him Victor. He wasn't cuddly so perhaps he was a Victoria 😁

I have had 6 cats over the last 40 odd years.
4 girls and 2 boys. The girls have been overwhelmingly affectionate and loving. They were a joy. The boys not so much, In fact my present cat has been a nightmare for 6 years.
He's a rescued street cat, aggressive, shows no affection whatsoever for us, doesn't need us at all. He's also always missing, so we don't have much of a bond. It's been such a shock for me after totally adoring all my others, so much so that I will never risk another cat.

IndigoC · 26/06/2022 23:47

Agree that it's very individual. But if I had to generalise from my experience I'd say males are initially friendlier and easier to win over. Female cats make you work harder but the bond is stronger, if that makes sense. These days I only have female cats. Stronger bonds and less likely to get into fights.

Siamese. Any gender. Most annoying affectionate cats ever.

Definitely more an individual variation thing than a sex thing. Breed definitely has an effect. I house/pet sat for 2 Burmese once. They belonged to a fairly distant relative and I'd only met them once, briefly, before so I was a virtual stranger to them. Both were vocal and clingy and followed me round the house incessantly, but the male took it to creepy levels. I couldn't sit down and watch TV because he'd not only want to be sitting on me, but would insist on climbing up to lie on my neck and stare into my face so I couldn't see past him. I made the mistake of going to sleep the first night with the bedroom door open. When I woke up I opened my eyes to find him lying in bed beside me with his head on my pillow, gazing into my eyes from about 2 inches away . I don't know how long he had been lying there. Freaked me right out. If he'd been your human boyfriend he would have talked about what to call your joint future kids on the first date, texted you 300 times a day, called you "babes" at the end of every sentence, held your hand at all times in public and turned up at your workplace every day crying if you ever dumped him.

All of my girls have been affectionate. Cheddar has no understanding of personal space. One of our joy cats was aloof but then became a lap cat as he got older. My parents cat adores my dad!

SammyScrounge · 27/06/2022 02:29

Male cats are often most affectionate. Entitled males +- they love being petted and stroked. They believe it is their right.

caringcarer · 27/06/2022 02:43

I have one of each both are very affectionate but I have had them from birth. They are litter mates. My boy get jealous of female up cuddling me for too long. He gives her the look and she gets down then he jumps up.

My current cat, all black female, gets in bed for cuddles every morning but is scared of my DH. Her predecessor didn’t cuddle but he was friendly and confident with everyone. Different strokes I guess.

Lorddenning1 · 27/06/2022 21:17

Thank you @Lorddenning1 They know it too 🤷‍♀️

Ihaveatabbycat · 02/07/2022 13:47

Ive got a male cat but who is warming up to being a lap cat and is currently affectionate however I've never had a female cat.

He got more affectionate as he got older so maybe it depends on age?

SnowWhitesSM · 02/07/2022 13:53

My boy is affectionate once or twice a day.

He waits for me by the front door when he hears my car and sleeps on the bottom of my bed. He's very cute and his twice a day cuddles make me laugh.

Theoldwoman · 02/07/2022 14:37

Cats I have had over my lifetime:
Boy
Boy
Girl
Boy
Girl
Boy
Girl
Boy

and currently we have a boy.

The boys definitely more cuddly, the girls were more adventurous, outdoorsy.

Interestingly, ages they lived to were:
15, 14, 22, 16, 15, 16, 20, 17. So the females lived the longest.
Current kitty is almost a year old.

Dancingwithhyenas · 02/07/2022 14:40

We have a very affectionate neutered male cat.

Reallyreallyborednow · 02/07/2022 14:42

Siamese. Any gender. Most annoying affectionate cats ever

😂😂😂😂so true.

genitals make not one bit of difference. Some of it is the cat’s personality, some is how it was raised.

mine is a rescue who wants affection and to be cuddly, but doesn’t know how. Spends all their time following you round, howls when you leave the room, but spends 30 mins walking up and down you sitting and standing on your lap before giving up and watching you sadly from the floor.

more to do with being semi feral for the first 18m than sex.

Reallyreallyborednow · 02/07/2022 14:44

Thing is anyway cats are neutered so behaviour won’t really be “male” or “female”, influenced by sexually mature hormone production.

so you can’t attribute behaviour in that way, it’s purely confirmation bias.

Ejk1990 · 02/07/2022 14:56

I think its down to personality to be honest and your bond. My most affectionate cat was a male, but only as he got older. He was my cat soul mate.

I have a very aloof female and an extremely friendly female now. But I like all types of cats, I'm a cat lady 🤣

Floralnomad · 02/07/2022 15:03

I agree with the pp if you want cuddly cats get Siamese . These are my Siamese grand kittens
