Where did you get your cat?

Just that really. My mum would like a cat/ kitten. Her last one was a rescue, is this where most people get them from?

Shes hasn’t got a particular kind/ look in mind. Just a friendly one to keep her company.

CPL and local cats rescue. We have another cat who was born on a farm and my DH was a colleague of the owner so we had one kitten, only given to friends and family

custardbear · 12/06/2022 09:24

... was going to say don't buy privately unless you know the people involved, lots of crappy people out there who farm kittens for cash

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/06/2022 09:41

really pisses me off now when I see people post wanted ads asking for grey kittens. They’re cats, they aren’t supposed to match your home decor

My first cat was grey, and I've always liked to have a grey mog since Nothing to do with home decor, just a preference.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/06/2022 09:58

Is the grey cat love something to do with Russian Blues? Not everyone can have an RB but a grey cat will do the trick?

I did read that the arsiest unfriendliest grey cat will be picked over the friendliest sweetest black cat , such is the bias against them Sad

Mine have mostly been strays. Currently have 3, all from the streets. Are you anywhere near Mansfield Cat Rescue? It's the rescue that took in stray Len for Toddlerteaplease. He was very poorly and is now in foster care. They seem like a wonderful rescue.

The Moggery- i think it's an independent rescue centre

Our Jorts was found under our backstairs on a cold night. DH put up a lovely poster of him on the streeets around us but within hours they were all pulled down. He says it was coincidence but I think some arsehole dumped a cute ginger kitten.

My best beloved cat who has left us now came from a cat hoarder house a couple of blocks away. He lived in the huge storm drain beside our house and it took a year to lure him inside. He was an epic cat.

We've got a black cat who we all adore. We went to the RSPCA an hour's drive away to consider a traumatised black cat. When we got there I learned the plan was I was to come in daily and sit with this traumatised cat for an hour for however long it took. We left with our boy who was in the SEN room helping socialise the other cats. He's a gem.

My best cat acquiring story is the day the calico from next door came over with one kitten and parked it on the spare bed. She came back with one more and then she stood there and yelled at us until we followed her to the garage next door and found 4 more kittens that were trapped under fallen boxes. She then decided we were nice people and could take over feeding the kittens. The 'owner' came over to use our phone (this was long ago) and saw the cat and said oh that's my cat! Where are the kittens? I'm planning to take them all and let them loose in the bush. The NZ bush where feral cats are a really bad idea. He left without his kittens and cat and never spoke to me again.

I actively choose black cats - love them! Both my black boys have been shy but very loving and gentle once trust is built.

All our cats have been rescues. Mostly from the RSPCA and one from Cats Protection.

I loved and love them so much.

bengalcat · 15/06/2022 12:54

From a breeder - ended up with one pedigree kitten and a rescued 2 yr old cross - they’re both quite old now but once they go will try the local cat rescue - would be quite happy with a old Moggy or one that’s been there for ages / less likely to be adopted

ElevenOG · 15/06/2022 13:03

Preloved Pets website. Controversial I know, but I fell in love with their photos and that was that.

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2022 13:28

It makes sense to match your cat to your decor. I didn't but the decor now matches the cat

IncompleteSenten · 15/06/2022 13:30

My mum found a kitten and after nobody came forward on FB to claim her (she wasn't chipped) I took her.

She was badly malnourished to the point her growth is stunted and she had an eye deformity that needed surgery so we suspect she was abandoned.

Our kitten came from a rescue. Her mother was found young , pregnant , and living under a hedge. The rescue fosters out their cats to volunteers homes. We visited our kitten from a very young age before they came home to us .

Ours is what’s known as a ‘failed foster’ - six day-old kittens came to us to foster with their mum, four kittens and their mum went back to the charity for rejoining at the end of 10 weeks…

GuppytheCat · 15/06/2022 13:34

Rehoming rather than rejoining, regiming or whatever Autocarrot has decided on this week.

JorisBonson · 15/06/2022 13:36

Most from Cats Protection.

One from a friend of a friend who was moving abroad and couldn't keep her (older) cat.

DH found girl cat wandering the streets as a tiny kitten, she'd somehow escaped from a profit breeders house and was in a dreadful state 😡

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/06/2022 16:42

We have a Gumtree cat. I’d been trying unsuccessfully with the local rescue for ages (always too slow) then one Saturday night typed cats into Gumtree randomly. Knew she was our cat and contacted the people first thing the next day. They had had her since she was a kitten but she was really stressed by boisterous children at home and another on the way. We went to meet her a couple of days later, and she came to live here the next day. They gave us all her things, and refused any money - I gave them gift vouchers for the DC.

That was five years ago next month and I am still in touch with her “old mum”. She has a pretty good gig here and is currently lying in the shade monitoring the pigeons on the bird feeder.

diningiswest · 15/06/2022 16:52

Salisbury

Want2beme · 16/06/2022 10:34

Judystilldreamsofhorses, lovely girl😁. Is she making very important pigeon obs?

SatinHeart · 16/06/2022 10:42

Pets4homes - turned out to be a lovely local lady and we kept in touch. Am aware that many on there aren't though.

Did try local CPL first but they only homed kittens in pairs and we only wanted one. There's a fab local rescue shelter near me now but it didn't exist when we were looking.

GuppytheCat · 16/06/2022 10:45

CPL’s policy baffles me. Not all litters come in even numbers, and not all unrelated (or even related) cats like each other.

Reallyreallyborednow · 16/06/2022 11:08

me too. I will never have more than one cat again as I’ve seen the issues with multi cat households and how much happier they are as sole cats. Adult cats don’t need “company”- it can in fact be stressful for them having another cat in their territory, even if they appear to get on.

my current cat the charity wanted a single cat home because they recognised stressful behaviours around others.

there’s a london charity as well that will only rehome in pairs. They’ve lost quite a few homes with that policy.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 16/06/2022 14:39

Two of mine came from local farm litters.
One was a private re-homing via the dreaded Gumtree, but no money exchanged hands.

Notcoolright · 16/06/2022 14:43

Have had 3 cats in my life. All 3 came from local farms. Wild cats had litters in their barns and they gave the kittens away to locals who wanted them. They still do. No money involved.

GuppytheCat · 16/06/2022 14:59

Reallyreallyborednow -- To be fair, our original single cat (described by the rescue as 'billy no mates, and not cuddly either') has thrived on having a kitten to play with. She was rejected by her mother and littermates, and the arrival of a confident but very small kitten seems to have given her the kittenhood she missed.

Awwwww.

We'd had that kitten (and its siblings) from a day old, though, so we were pretty sure of the personalities concerned.
