Just that really. My mum would like a cat/ kitten. Her last one was a rescue, is this where most people get them from?

Shes hasn’t got a particular kind/ look in mind. Just a friendly one to keep her company.

Gum tree. We researched what typed of breed would be best for our family. I have young kids that i knew would pester them and needed to find a cat that would be ok with that.

So we got a rag doll and honestly he is fantastic

Specific breed Rescue and Welfare x 3 cats - pay suggested donation

Breeders rehoming ex-studs x 2 cats so effectively "rescues" - cost is pretty much the same as suggested donation. Neutered, vaccinations up to date, genetically health tested, so ready for retirement and no more hormones!

A ditch at the side of the road(starving feral kitten

HeadNorth · 11/06/2022 21:27

Local cat rescue - Bury when we lived in Derbyshire, then 20 years later after she died, Edinburgh. Both places were over run with kittens. Always rescue- our first kitty was with us 20 years and how wonderful she was. Kitty no 2 has been with us for 6 years - I love my rescue moggies.

Smokeybacon72 · 11/06/2022 21:28

SSPCA he's quite a different wee cat from the horror we were told he was.

Cats protection

Vinorosso74 · 11/06/2022 21:32

Firstly, I'm glad you've decided to go down the rescue route. There are so many lovely cats needing homes.
Ours is another Cats Protection adoptee.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/06/2022 21:32

My cat history since the early '80s.

Cat 1 - street cat just moved in with me
Cats 2 & 3 neighbour's cat had kittens.
Cats 4,5 & 6 - farm kittens (via a work colleague)
Cats 7 & 8 - Battersea kittens
Cats 9 & 10 - Battersea kittens

Cats 7-10 are still around 😼

BluebellField · 11/06/2022 21:33

My babies came from the local flute teacher. Her cat had kittens and we couldn't say no. The best decision ever.

Our cat before these two was a rescue and was truly lovely.

If I had another, I would definitely rescue. So many beautiful cats who need homes.

Adopt from local rescue. Adopt don't shop

agentscully · 11/06/2022 21:35

I’ll look at Cats Protection, I hadn’t heard them before.

Thanks all.

Cats Protection is a good one - they're mostly smaller rescues run fairly independently but still under the CPL banner.

There may be other independent rescues in your area too.

Battersea Old Windsor (cat blind date in lockdown)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/06/2022 21:41

We got ours from a guy at work whose cat had had kittens. She was free, we collected her litter trained at 10 weeks.

Ponderingwindow · 11/06/2022 21:44

All our cats, we have 3 which is a bit crazy, have come from the same rescue. They are conveniently located to us, are well organized, and house cats in foster homes while getting them ready for adoption so they get a good sense of personality and appropriate placement.

EmmaC78 · 11/06/2022 21:46

Yes, definitely try Cats protection, there should be one relatively local to you. My last two cats have both come from CP and were both lovely.

TooHotTooGreedy · 11/06/2022 21:47

Mine was advertised on Pets for homes as ‘in need of rehoming’.
In need of rescuing more like! I’m so glad we got her and she gets to live a life full of love and pampering.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/06/2022 21:52

@OldSpeclkledHen
Are we neigbours? My four Battersea cats are all from the Old Windsor branch too

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/06/2022 21:55

Neighbours even 😹

AlternativelyWired · 11/06/2022 22:15

He wandered in and kept wandering in. His successor came over to say hello as I approached my house and held up his front paw as though hurt. He was a few months old then. Now he shouts at the front door at 7am to come in and can usually be found on my bed or dds bed. Pretty girl came over when calling for handsome boy and gradually got friendlier. She used to shake but purr at the same time. She's currently curled up on my bed. They tag team each other-she stays in all night and goes back out when he comes in. They actually belong to the neighbour but we now have a shared care arrangement. Handsome one is a bit of a six dinner Sid but none of his other homes are quite as frequented as mine.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/06/2022 22:24

St Francis Persian rescue for all
Three. The adoption fee was £200 each. But they'd had a lot of money spent on them as they were not in a good way

Wbeezer · 11/06/2022 22:27

My last two were from our local old fashioned petshop, £30 and a local farm advertised on Gumtree £35, I don't think anyone was breeding them for profit at those prices!

DialsMavis · 11/06/2022 22:28

A local rescue, like a PP she had been used for breeding (very desirable breed, but this wasn't why we wanted her). She was also around 18 months -2 years old and had been used to provide 2 litters then discarded, awful! She was so nervous and timid, it has been very rewarding to turn her into our very spoilt lap cat. I think she will always be very nervous but she has a lovely life now. As long as people are willing to pay £££ for kittens it will continue unfortunately.

eurochick · 11/06/2022 22:34

Breeder.

We tried local rescues but were turned down because we had children (one calm cat-loving five year old girl), because we lived on a busy road (we were happy to take a cat that needed to live indoors), etc. They just seemed to put a lot of obstacles in the way - I have heard many other people say the same. It was important to me for my daughter to grow up with pets so we got two pedigree BSH sisters from a registered breeder. They lead an incredibly pampered (indoor) life.

Honeyroar · 11/06/2022 22:41

Mine came from Preloved. I didn’t pay anything for them. I think I gave her £20, which she didn’t want to take. They were with a lady who took the ones the RSPCA didn’t have room for. She’d done a heck of a lot for them (neutering, jabs etc). Not everyone on Preloved/gumtree is a breeder.
