Where did you get your cat?

Just that really. My mum would like a cat/ kitten. Her last one was a rescue, is this where most people get them from?

Shes hasn’t got a particular kind/ look in mind. Just a friendly one to keep her company.

Gumtree

BiscoffSundae · 11/06/2022 22:44

Mine weren’t kittens they was 1 years old and 2 for £20 so not breeding for profit it was someone who bought them who could no longer care for them

WhackingPhoenix · 11/06/2022 22:45

• One moved in off the street, tried to find where she came on but I’m so glad I couldn’t because she’s just so wonderful
• One was from a family member’s accidental litter
• One was a ‘foster’ from a charity but she was clearly going nowhere from the moment she entered my house Grin

DP has said no more cats but I’m doing my best!

GreenAxolotl · 11/06/2022 22:47

Ours is a rescue. First rescue we approached they thought we lived on too busy a road. I approached another rescue and they checked us out and were fine with our road. Current cat barely goes beyond the garden anyway. It is worth trying different rescues if you need to as they all have their own rules.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/06/2022 22:52

Both my cats came from people I vaguely knew who had let their cat have a litter (irresponsibly) one was free and one cost £10.

In the future I'd go to a rescue.

Reallyreallyborednow · 11/06/2022 22:54

A local rescue, like a PP she had been used for breeding (very desirable breed, but this wasn't why we wanted her)

mine was grey, and churned out highly desirable grey kittens.

really pisses me off now when I see people post wanted ads asking for grey kittens. They’re cats, they aren’t supposed to match your home decor 😤

Breeder.

We tried local rescues but were turned down because we had children (one calm cat-loving five year old girl), because we lived on a busy road (we were happy to take a cat that needed to live indoors), etc. They just seemed to put a lot of obstacles in the way - I have heard many other people say the same. It was important to me for my daughter to grow up with pets so we got two pedigree BSH sisters from a registered breeder. They lead an incredibly pampered (indoor) life.

This. we live next door to a dogs home and we were knocked back several times because if the kids - which i fully understand.

Then we started looking at cats due to me starting work and the same again, we even joined a few face book cat rescue cat groups but still got ignored or knocked back.

So ended up looking at what the best breed for our family would be and buying from a dealer. I know its not terribly MN it is what it is and he ( cat/dog) is king of the house.

I bought a ragdoll and most likely love him him more than my kids ...

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 11/06/2022 23:00

Current incumbents: 1 from rescue, 1 rehomed from a friend of a friend and 1 bought from a breeder...

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 11/06/2022 23:01

( 3 previous cats all rescues)

Isaidnoalready · 11/06/2022 23:03

Friend of a friend I was adamant we were looking and maybe getting one literally ended up with three of them the one I wanted his brother because he was lonely and his other brother because he was abandoned by his new owner at 6 months 💔

weegiemum · 11/06/2022 23:08

From a friend who's parents run a farm and have several cats in the barn. Despite being born to a semi-feral barn cat she's the most affectionate cat you could hope to meet, she's 7 now and still roams fairy widely but comes home to sleep either on our bed or on the bed in the shed!

Shmithecat2 · 11/06/2022 23:09

Literally off the streets when we lived in the ME.

Whatever you do, do not buy any off Facebook pages/Gumtree/PetsforHomes. Go through a rescue.

mandajmo · 11/06/2022 23:12

Always rescue. Lots of positives, health check checked, chipped and in need of a loving home. Please don't buy animals from social platforms or marketplaces.

blueblueelectricblue28 · 12/06/2022 00:09

Got my baby girl from Battersea. They practically bit my hand off when I said I wanted one 10+ years old. Childhood cats were all farm kittens plus one who appeared in our garden at 4 weeks!
Would always have a rescue in future.

Where did you get your cat?
IclimbedSnowdon · 12/06/2022 00:43

Blue Cross, they were really good. She was 18 months when we got her. My previous cat was from Cat Protection League, got her at 6 months and had her 22 years. Still miss her.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/06/2022 01:20

CPL
DH wanted cats , but we had to wait until our herd of elderly guinea-pigs went off to The Rainbow Bridge as I wouldn't have cats'n;guineas together . I also said the 100% had to have a cat door .
He especially wanted a black cat (we were looking for 2 cats )

It came down to a choice of a bonded pair of a black+ a tortie/white (3yp) or a young adult pair of black M/F
We were able to offer the right home for the black cats - adult home, garden, previous cat owners , no expectations of them , not too precious about my stair carpet !
They have ruled the roost ever since Grin

MsOllie · 12/06/2022 01:22

One from cats protection
The other one is not my cat despite his protests but I got him from well, he turned up and let himself in the window Hmm

Gingerkittykat · 12/06/2022 02:58

I was turned down by CPL over the phone as the woman on the phone used to live in my street and said it was too busy despite the fact I was going to keep the cat indoors.

Cat 1 (15 years ago) came from my sister's colleagues. The cat actually had two litters of kittens, two were 6 months and the other litter were tiny. He was free.

Cat 2 from a friend of a friend. Her cat had been caught out and had 2 kittens and we took one. Mum went to the vet to get spayed the day after the kittens left. He was free but I gave a gift to the owner.

Cat 3 is a ragdoll from a registered breeder.

AwkwardSquad · 12/06/2022 08:15

Our first two cats were sisters, via a friend who’d rescued a pregnant stray. We had them for over 20 years. They were fab. Very different characters.

Current cat came via the RSPCA, she was about two and had had a poor start in life. She was always sociable but gradually became more and more cuddly as she aged (she’s about 13 now).

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 12/06/2022 08:27

My beautiful 20 year old girl died during lockdown and although I was devastated I couldn't stand the silence in the house so I went to all of the local rescues and there was not a single cat to be found. I couldn't believe it. I've always had rescue cats.
Anyway a friend had an 11 year old cat that wasn't getting on with her other cats and dogs so she said I could adopt her.
Then DS said his neighbours cat had had after of black kittens and was having trouble rehoming them because black cats are not popular.
I had a girl from that litter so we're a happy family once more.

LaQuern · 12/06/2022 08:35

CPL for my first one, RSPCA for my second

LubaLuca · 12/06/2022 08:41

We've had all of ours from Cats Protection with the exception of 1 who came from the RSPCA. CPL seem to have a more straightforward rehoming process in my experience.

TroysMammy · 12/06/2022 08:46

All kittens. First cat free to good home. Second and third cats, brothers, from my cousin. Current cat, Cats Protection.

RedEagles15 · 12/06/2022 08:51

Gumtree £70 each for a pair of brothers, the litter had 5 kittens so I'm not convinced there would have been much if any profit for them.
I tried to rescue but they said my house wasn't big enough and there was nowhere to put the litter tray.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/06/2022 09:22

In the overlooked section of a pet rescue website 😭 she needed a quiet home with no kids who’d commit to the long fur. She’d been waiting for a new home for a year.

Very spoilt puss now.
