DCat (5 months) was neutered on Monday. Recovered well and seemed pretty normal on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Yesterday we noticed he hadn't eaten as much as usual, and seemed quite quiet. Same again today. Probably only eaten one third to one half of what he normally would. Has been playing but not as much as usual. He just seems flat.

I'm just back from the vets following his post-op check. I explained the above an the vet nurse took his temp (on the high side of normal, but normal) checked his wound (slightly swollen but nothing significant) and looked at his gums) normal. She went out to have a quick word with the vet, who apparently said some cats just take a little bit longer to bounce back and to keep an eye on him over the weekend. I've just realised she didn't ask anything about if he was using his litter tray as normal, or if he was drinking normally (I think he is but not certain).

I don't know. I just feel really uneasy. He just doesn't seem right in himself and I'm not reassured by the advice just to see if he gets worse?! The think is, he did seem better on day 2 and 3, but now seems worse on day 4 and 5.

What do you think? Should I take him back and ask to see the vet? I feel sick to my stomach to be honest.

Are you giving him Metacam? My female had it but I can’t remember if my boy was given it to take after his op.

That reduces appetite and makes them lethargic which could explain it.

Thank you for replying boom. No, he isn't taking anything. The vet nurse said that the anesthetic etc will have fully worn off by now.

I'm kicking myself for not insisting to have him seen by the vet, especially with it now being the weekend.

I hope it’s just a case of taking a few days to recover & he bounces back soon. Such a worry when they can tell you what’s wrong!

How is your kitten today ? My female cat appeared to have recovered straight away after spay but after a few days became quite unwell. Vet check revealed slightly raised temp but nurse wasn't worried. Next day I took her to emergency vet and she had an infection, was quite dehydrated and needed I.v fluids an over night stay and antibiotics for a week. Not trying to scare you but worth trusting your gut if you don't think he's right.

@worriesandwobbles, thank you, that was exactly the situation I was worried about - that he had an infection developing. I'm so glad you followed your gut and that your cat was OK!

Thankfully he had perked up of his own accord and is back to his normal self. I'm so relieved!
