Needy rescue cat wants to be petted for hours

I adopted a 4 year old cat 2 weeks ago. She was in the rescue for a month (came from a loving home with 3 other cats) and was very shy and nervous in the rescue.

Spent 1 week in hiding, made it to my lap after that.

Since then her neediness has been exhausting. I pet her for 20 minutes in the morning. I work from home so make it clear I won't engage with her while at the desk - she pushes her luck with this, around my ankles, stretching up at my knee, appearing on table behind me and miaows a lot but it's do-able. I take a 10 minute break every couple of hours and get on the couch to pet her - she knows that this is the sign I will pet her and comes running over.

It's the evening that's the problem - she wants to be petted for literally hours, however long I do it it's never enough. She lies on my chest and wants to put her face to mine and be cuddled like a baby. sometimes she will move on to my lap but as soon as i pick up an ipad or phone she is back on my chest and wanting me to gaze at her. She will take quick breaks to eat or use the litter but will hurry back. If I get up for any reason she yowls the house down. It only ends when I go to bed (I don't allow her upstairs in the evening).

Does the neediness die down? I'm not massively into watching TV and it's the only thing I can do when she's on me. I'm glad she's happy, but I'd like to have a bit more of a varied evening than telling her what a good girl she is and petting her! She doesn't play with toys with me, it's always the cuddling she wants. Getting another cat to keep her company isn't an option. She's a shorthair crossbreed but I think might have a bit of Burmese or something in her, she is very vocal in general.

In sat watching Netflix with a cat on my knee, my dd is on the sofa with a cat on her knee! I have 2 needy girl cats. They are sisters and were hand reared after being born premature and rejected by their mother. Three years I’ve had them and they are complete lap cats!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 22:05

They do improve.. a bit. Mine is still needy but I make an effort to REALLY fuss him when I have time and I put a footstool by my desk, he will sit on that happily and sleep next to me

Mine is a rescue, he is either gazing at me, yelling at me or wrapped around me. Weirdly hates being picked up

That gaze. Envy I need a new cat.

@Naranjo.....
I'm diverging a bit, but are you sure your gorgeous cat is female? It will be unusual if she is, because 80% of ginger cats are male.
Just a thought - not that it will make any difference to her/his "neediness" - which, as PPs have said, will settle down, honestly!

JoanOgden · 21/01/2022 22:12

This is my life with my rescue cat. At night she sleeps on my bed, or sometimes on my head.

I also live alone and have considered trying online dating just to have someone else to share the cat love Grin

Well I don't know myself for sure...but am sure the vet at the rescue would have got it right, unless it's an easy mix up? She's small as well, 3.2kg.

You don't know how lucky you are!!
You sound cold and impatient with her. My cat never comes near me.
Try and imagine how she's feeling, being in a rescue for weeks, she probably feels insecure.
Did you really want her.?

RandomMess · 21/01/2022 22:13

@Sparklingbrook be careful what you wish for!!!

Have a cat wrapped around you can be rather suffocating especially when WFH. If I didn't have DH to share the load I think I'd have lost it.

@minipie

You could try letting her upstairs with you at night, maybe if she gets to sleep near you she won’t need so much in the day and evening?

I often have my cat on my lap during zoom calls…!

I have pretty chronic insomnia so can't really add to any lack of sleep by worrying about a cat in the bed / running around.

Sparkling cats beauty is best appreciated from the other side of the sofa so you can take it all in.

It is really tiring having a needy cat! It's like having a toddler clinging off your leg 24/7 and shouting mama Mine will shout all day, and I mean all day at me, I can't sit without him on my lap and if I move I get an injured look. He will howl all night if he is in my room because he wants me to fuss him and gaze at him You can't eat a meal without them trying to get on your lap, or read a book
WonderfulYou · 21/01/2022 22:16

What a gorgeous cat!

My cat is similar but I don’t pet him all of the time I just let him sit on my lap and he knows that I won’t stroke him the entire time.

Most cats will try and disturb you if you’re working so you may have to just shut the door.

JoanOgden · 21/01/2022 22:17

She may be fine at night, mine is very quiet and I am now totally used to sleeping with a cat on my pillow.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 22:18

You could try the just letting her sit in your lap without stroking (mine is there now purring away) and love bombing Grin as well? When I get up, mine gets on my bed and we have 10/15 mins of cuddles, kisses, purring at me, head butting and then he goes off for his breakfast (he refuses to eat if I haven't cuddles him...)

Once she is more settled she will probably likely be less clingy eyes up cat on lap

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2022 22:18

That is the cutest thing ever @MaybeHeIsMyCat. My heart!

When we went to see Sparklingcat for the first time she was in a foster home. She spent a lot of the time shouting at the birds in the garden while foster Mum assured us is she was a lap cat on the whole especially in the evening.
For the last 11 years she will sit next to me but not on me. I was misled big time. But I do love her.

Naranjo · 21/01/2022 22:18

@violetbunny

One of my cats struggles to self settle, I put it down to her having been separated from her mum too early (she was a rescue). She will meow and demand attention until she settles at night, I think it's because she wants to feel secure and comforted.

What's worked well is having something of a "bedtime routine" for her and creating a place she feels she can sleep safely. In her case she loves sleeping completely covered under a particular throw - it's fluffy so she kneads it for ages which seems to calm her down, then she crawls under it and goes to sleep.

The other thing is that after 2 weeks your cat is possibly still very much in a settling in phase. My mum's rescue cat took a good 6 months to properly settle in and start to feel comfortable. So it may be that once your cat starts to feel a bit more secure in her new home she will stop looking to you for quite as much attention.

The bedtime routine is a good idea. I do a kind of wind down when she sees me re-fill her bowls, check her littler, put the lights out. But I could add 'tucking her in' a bit under the throw.

She's OK once I actually shut the door for the night, it's only been one night really when she was miaowing a long time when I was gone, generally she is silent (apart from running around playing).

Seriously @Naranjo, i have never had a cat like yours. It sounds just like having a newborn baby and must be exhausting. So while I am jealous I hope things settle down for you.

Oh come on. I just said I spent 3 hours petting her tonight, 20 mins in the morning, and every couple of hours for 10 minutes. I am endlessly patient and loving with her.

how sad is it that I really want that kangaroo pouch hoody.

My clingy lap junkies have mostly settled, OP. Still have brief moments.

I was going to ask this, I’ve never known a ginger female cat just as I’ve never known a tortoiseshell male.

Ginger boys are generally the soppiest cats of all.

Cats are very contrary. Try chasing her round for cuddles and she might become aloof...

As the slave to two very socially distant cats I've had since kitten hood I am very jealous!
