How often do you completely change your litter trays

2 indoor cats, 2 trays, cheap litter as I'm currently a f/t carer on a tight budget but a recent sub for wood chip is making me reconsider.

I scoop as soon as anything solid lands and change 2-3 times a week atm.

Once a month. Cats Best wood pellets. Clumping ones so it's easier to contain the waste

A580Hojas · 19/01/2022 18:39

Once a MONTH? 😱

1984Winston · 19/01/2022 18:40

3 indoor cats, scoop twice a day, change once a week, I use golden grey odour cat litter

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 19/01/2022 18:40

I don't. Thick ish layer of cats best and the wee never touches the bottom so I scoop it out and that's it
If I pull all the litter back then the bottom is clean (he's a neat cat anyway!)

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 19/01/2022 18:44

To add more, effectively I do what I do with a horses bed Grin
Remove wet and solids ASAP, add fresh as needed. The "old" litter isn't soiled and so stays in, I'm not binning clean litter

RogerDodger · 19/01/2022 18:46

Daily because his lordship wouldn’t lower himself to urinate where there might possibly be a trace of urine already present, instead preferring to relive himself elsewhere in the house Hmm so daily changes it is.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2022 18:46

Everyday. I use wood pellets.

VikingLady · 19/01/2022 18:46

Three cats but have outdoor access, one litter tray with cheapest crystals since the tray is by the front door.

Pick up solids whenever I pass it or smell it, change it fully once per week. It gets hoses down thoroughly when we can face it, so not very often at all.

RogerDodger · 19/01/2022 18:47

Solids are lifted as soon as I spot them.

Podgedodge · 19/01/2022 18:53

One grown cat who was used to free outdoor access now restricted because of kittens, so is making displeasure known by using litter trays, and two four month old kittens. Complete change every other day, and constant, CONSTANT scooping. They take it in turns and just love new litter! (Two trays)

Blushtassel · 19/01/2022 18:58

I’d love to change it less but having two kittens I’m using non clumping wood pellets. What age can I switch to clumping?

cheeseismydownfall · 19/01/2022 18:58

We have one cat and one tray, and we are using Natusan litter, which clumps brilliantly.

We are both WFH so the litter tray is attended to multiple times a day - basically as soon as we see he has used it.

We completely change the litter every 2 weeks, at which point it still looks / smells completely clean. We recently left it 3 weeks and it was fine, although it was getting a bit low by that point. We've chosen not to top it up between litter changes because then you can end up throwing out nearly-fresh litter when it gets changed, or conversely ending up with some litter which is actually really old.

We also have a stainless steel tray rather than a plastic one so we can clean it really thoroughly. Personally I find plastic always ends up retaining smells no matter how much you clean it.

emberplum · 19/01/2022 18:59

Once a month here as well. 2 indoor cats, 3 litter trays with thick litter. I scoop poops everyday and wee every 2 days. They like to use one tray just for poops so that one is Alexander than the rest. I completly change and wash out the trays once a month. We use cats best wood clumping litter and it's completely odourless.

Chikapu · 19/01/2022 18:59

Poop is scooped almost immediately, the whole box is cleaned and filled with fresh litter once a week.

NoSquirrels · 19/01/2022 18:59

Like others we use Cat’s Best and don’t need to change it very frequently. Scoop solids ASAP, and wet clumps really effectively so there’s never any real need to do a full wash & change, just top up with fresh. Probably clean it out totally only every 2 weeks or so? No smells and no complaints from the mistress of the house.

emberplum · 19/01/2022 18:59

Alexander? That should say cleaner!

cheeseismydownfall · 19/01/2022 19:00

Re the clumping litter - we've used Natusan since we got our kitten at 13 weeks old. They say it is perfectly safe for kittens.

Batfinkwings · 19/01/2022 19:02

I feel like a slattern because my indoor boys tray only gets completely changed once every 6 weeks! It does get a thorough cleaning then, including the scoop.

We used Worlds Best Cat litter and it honestly doesn’t need fully changing more often than that. It clumps really nicely so you can scoop out liquids in a big lump and solids coated in the litter.
DH and I both work from home so we scoop it as soon as we happen to notice it’s been used.

It doesn’t smell bad! I have checked with multiple visitors as I am a bit paranoid about us going nose blind over it.
We use Felight spray to remove any odours in the air if DCat does a particular pungent poop, and sometimes sprinkle a bit of Felight in the litter to help keep it fresh.

Plump82 · 19/01/2022 19:04

We use cats best and the trays get emptied completely each time we buy a new huge bag so every 3 months roughly. Like others have said, it gets emptied constantly but because it clumps so well, it doesn't soil the rest of the litter.

SagittariusDwarf · 19/01/2022 19:09

Used to fully change it and clean the tray once a week, now it's more like twice a week. Poo gets scooped every day.

SamMil · 19/01/2022 19:09

2 cats (with outdoor access too) on wooden pellets.

I scoop out poos when I spot them and then clean the whole thing once a week.

Naranjo · 19/01/2022 19:09

Sounds like I need some Cats Best. Currently using the clay (?) non-clumping and changing the whole litter every 2 days even with scooping inbetween. It's costing me a fortune! She doesn't like it even by the second night, she pulls up the liner and wees and poops in the bare box.

AwkwardSquad · 19/01/2022 19:11

Daily, we use a small amount of wood pellet litter. It’s what she was used to at the rescue and we just kept it up.

eurochick · 19/01/2022 19:18

Twice a week. We used wooden pellets.

shakinsti · 19/01/2022 19:23

We use clumping crystals. I scoop solids as soon as I notice them, scoop any clumped liquid at the same time. Once there's not much litter left I empty it and give it a proper clean out. I'd say that's roughly monthly. We have two cats and two trays but they tend to favour one (despite the trays and litter being identical.)
