How often do you completely change your litter trays

2 indoor cats, 2 trays, cheap litter as I'm currently a f/t carer on a tight budget but a recent sub for wood chip is making me reconsider.

I scoop as soon as anything solid lands and change 2-3 times a week atm.

This like a bed sheet changing thread.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/01/2022 20:12

so is making displeasure known by using litter trays, and two four month old kittens.
Does she use the kittens to wipe? Grin

And being serious - we use clumping clay litter, clean out the used litter daily, but almost never fully change the litter.

lljkk · 19/01/2022 20:18

wood pellets, scoop solids out frequently, only full refresh when it's quite sodden.

TracyMosby · 19/01/2022 20:20

Whenever they've used it. Once or twice a day. We have three trays and two cats who wont go out when the weather isnt tropical. They also wont use a tray if it isnt clean. And sometimes they will poo next to the tray if they deem it not clean enough.

FelicityBeedle · 19/01/2022 20:21

We use silica crystals, go about ten days between changing but that’s without removing any urine as it’s all absorbed. It also dehydrates any solid deposits making them very inoffensive.

Yarnivore · 19/01/2022 20:21

One cat, who also goes outside, but uses tray approx twice a day, Intersand litter which says can go 40 days between full litter change and I do a full change about that, maybe every 6-8 weeks. I scoop every day.

WutheringHeights66 · 19/01/2022 20:24

Every single use.

So I line my trays with newspaper and literally throw a small handful of wood chip litter in each. Just enough for the cats to scrat about. Then when they have used the tray I lift the paper, litter and mess and replace it.

Fortunately my go outside most of the time, and are so well trained with minimal litter that will will use an empty clean tray if they need to go and I forgot to line it.

I cannot believe the length of time some of these are left, they must be huge deep trays.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 19/01/2022 20:26

@WutheringHeights66 yeah I use an under bed type box if you know the ones I mean? He gets litter everywhere otherwise! And there's a good 2-3 inches of litter in it
Because it clumps I can just scoop the clump out and the rest is clean

bengalcat · 19/01/2022 20:27

Daily - wood pellets - two cats who also go out

NewYearNewMinty · 19/01/2022 20:29

Thanks all.

So next question, apart from Cats Best, which litter do you use?

My normal schedule is a twice weekly full clean, trays lined with newspaper, and I asked because DD said this evening that the house always smells of cat.

I don't think it does (unless I let the trays go a day over which tbh probably happens more than it should Blush) but now I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong and would be better off getting a more expensive, clumping litter.

The problem is, people very quickly get used to a smell. If someone says it smells like cat wee, it most likely does.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 19/01/2022 20:32

2 trays, with 3 cats. 1ngoes out first thing until last thing at night. One goes in and out all day, one goes out once a day for, I think a shit and a piss. If they poo I clean that up as soon as they do it, but it rare. So it's about twice a week, possibly 3 times in the winter, IF they've used it. The summer might not get done even once. I just check morning and night to see if there is wee. I used recycled paper pallets, so you can tell if they've wee'd

silentpool · 19/01/2022 20:35

I use a combination of clay cat litter and wood pellets because it's cheaper. (But after the clay runs out, I will stick to wood only as I think it handles odour better).

I scoop out every day or two and dump the whole lot every week. I top up with litter about halfway through the week.

LethargeMarg · 19/01/2022 20:38

My cat hardly uses the litter tray and it doesn't smell so I totally change it every couple of months and lift out any poos in between

getsanta · 19/01/2022 20:43

World's Best Cat Litter is the best I've found. Different from Cat's Best.

DeckTheHallsWithGin · 19/01/2022 20:49

Greenwood’s wood based clumping is excellent- virtually no smell and the clumps of wet/dirty litter lift out leaving the rest clean. Wash the whole trays monthly and it really doesn’t need it more than that (2 cats allowed out in the day but in at night).

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 19/01/2022 20:49

Three indoor cats - I scoop poo when I see it and change the trays twice a week as otherwise one of ours will start pooping on the side Hmm

Inastatus · 19/01/2022 21:27

I’ve tried all sorts of litter - wood pellets, Cat’s Best, World’s Best etc. I now use silica crystals cat litter, either Sanicat Diamonds, Pettex or Wilco’s own. We have 2 indoor cats and I’m very sensitive to any sort of catty smell but I find this type of litter very effective in reducing odours. I scoop poos as soon as they’ve done them and stir the crystals round several times a day so the wee is completely absorbed. I empty the tray, wash it and renew the litter completely once a week.

Batfinkwings · 19/01/2022 21:43

Worlds Best Cat Litter is the one I use.
It really helps with smells clumps well so is long lasting.

Traumdeuter · 19/01/2022 21:53

One cat, one tray, once a week. We use Catsan and probably top up once a week too.

Keiki · 19/01/2022 21:58

I use Lidls clay clumping litter, scoop daily but have a good thick layer in the tray and rarely empty it all.

NewYearNewMinty · 19/01/2022 22:04

I've found the wood pellets better but let it go over today.

Probably need a better routine tbf.

2 cats, 1 tray, although one only uses the tray in an emergency, Worlds best multi cat litter. Full change every 4-6 weeks. Scooped twice a day. Doesn't smell at all.
I have looked after someone's cat that uses wood pellets and their tray had an odor within a few days of use.

purpleme12 · 19/01/2022 22:06

Every few days

purpleme12 · 19/01/2022 22:07

I use wood pellet litter (not clumping)
Just pets at home own brand
