Kidney failure. Appt made to pts this afternoon, is this the right decision?

Cat is 14yo. Hasn't seemed right for a week and had bloods yesterday. Has lost weight, seems miserable and in pain.

Vet has just rung and said it's kidney failure, results are unreadable/off the charts. Not sure if too high or low.

Vet said 2 options. PTS in which case it needs doing today as she is suffering. Or admit for IV fluids/hydration. Which would cost about 300-400 pounds. And while it would help her in the short term it wouldn't resolve the long term problem and would reoccur. She said there were more tests we could have such as ultrasounds to try and determine the problem better, obviously that would also cost.

Cat isn't insured. I do have money in the bank. If it was a case of spending 500 or so and she would be cured I'd spend it no problem. But sounds like I could easily spend getting on for 1k and be in the same position in a few months with an elderly cat?

Honestly better a day early than a day late. Much love to you, it's an awful place to be

@Gargellen

PTS definitely. Kidney failure makes them feel awful. 14 is a good age. If the cat was 7 - different.
My DD lost a seven year old cat who had congenital kidney cysts. Born with the disease but the cysts only started to grow when he was seven. His litter brother is hale and hearty at 18. Our then vet assured us that treatment would help, it didn’t, he had a miserable last week of life and in the same situation I would pts on diagnosis. Cats don’t live to a time scale, they just need to live feeling well, and when they aren’t it isn’t fair to prolong life.

If it helps at all, our 15 year old cat was diagnosed with severe kidney failure last year. We went the animal hospital route and he was put on a drip for a couple of days but his blood results did not change and we ended up having him pts. It cost us roughly £1200. I don't know.... we did feel like we had tried with him, but the end result was the same and the poor cat had to spend his last 2 days in a strange place away from us. It is such a hard time for you. Trust the vet and ask them what they would do if the cat was theirs. I find that gives me a clearer idea of the lie of the land.

I’m so sorry you’re having to make this decision. I had to do the same last week as my 16yr old boy cat had liver failure. My vet was lovely and after the bloods said that in all honesty if it was his cat he would it’s as ultrasound/ drip etc would be prolonging my cat’s pain. Heartbreaking but best option.

My 11 yr old daughter has struggled with the euthanasia and wants to start a campaign to get our vet named as a murderer though...

Vet said it’s the right thing to do and needed to be done. So it’s done. Thanks everyone

Flowers to you and your DD.

TheSpottedZebra · 18/01/2022 18:38

So sorry for your loss. It's a horrid choice to have to make, but in this case it was the kindest choice.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/01/2022 19:54

I’m sorry for both of you, you always wonder if you’ve done the right thing but the vet wouldn’t suggest pts lightly.

Stripyhoglets1 · 18/01/2022 20:01

So sorry. Your cat would have hated treatment and they always rally in that guilt inducing way when the appt is made. You've made the right decision

everybodystalking · 18/01/2022 20:24

So sorry but it was the right thing for your lovely cat Flowers
