Kitten fell from bedroom window today

Such a shock. Literally haven’t opened an upstairs window since we got him but I shook a rug out of it this morning and forgot to close it .

He fell onto a heating unit thing below with massive crash

Rushed to vet, who examined and did obs and said he seemed ok to come home . He had a tiny bit of tuna when he got in with painkiller in but has since been asleep under dd’s bed

I’ve beem checking him
Obv and he kind of purrs and rolled over a bit when I stroke him
But otherwise v subdued

I’ll take him back tomorrow but is that soon enough? Is it normal he’s
Just wanting to tuck himself away ?

Thanks (

I haven't anything to add, just a handhold Flowers
However...many years ago a friend lived on the 8th floor of a block of flats and their cat fell off the balcony, into a shrub.
Long story short one week later it was back to normal so I really hope this happens to you (the cat making a full and speedy recovery bit!)

Not an expert but I think it's better if they fall farther as they have time to right themselves and land safely. Our kitten was only a few months old when he leapt from my sons arms, landed badly and fractured his tibia. It was awful! We knew immediately something was wrong. I'd try to relax, he's been checked out so I'm sure he's all good.

Beamur · 14/01/2022 20:35

Poor kitty and poor you! What a shock.
If the vet has checked him and sent him home then maybe worry less. He's probably sore and a bit traumatized. Keep a close eye on him though. Did the vet suggest anything to look out for?

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 20:38

Thanks all.

Vet said look out for lack of appetite , sleeping a lot and not being his normal self ! All of which apply ! Will take him back in the morning if no change I think

I just don’t know how he landed , on feet or what? He was def kinda in shock but conscious when I got to him

OP posts:
Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 20:40

The thing he landed on (or crashed onto) is directly below the window so he prob fell the height a bedroom window less 3 foot

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 14/01/2022 20:41

I suspect he's in shock and sore, bless him. He may well be okay after some sleep but I'd keep a close eye on him and get him seen again if you're concerned.

It's much better to check him out if you're worried.

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 20:42

Yes def - I just wondering if tomorrow is soon enough

He’s responsive and purrs when I go and stroke his little chops

OP posts:
Beamur · 14/01/2022 20:44

That seems sensible. Kittens do sleep a lot but maybe if there's no lively moments that would be concerning.
Cats sometimes purr to self-soothe too.

ThirdElephant · 14/01/2022 20:45

Hope he's OK. There are some 24 hour vets, but

Honeyroar · 14/01/2022 20:45

You can always ring your vet for a chat if you’re worried. An out of hours vet should talk to you.

He’s only purring if I go and tickle his chin not self soothing (I don’t think )

*but I'd just keep an eye on him for now, if it were me

RoyKentsChestHair · 14/01/2022 21:03

Don’t want to be a downer, but purring isn’t always a happy sign in cats so don’t let that mask any signs of discomfort. I’m sure he’s fine, but even very unhappy or poorly cats can purr.

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 21:17

Just went with my son to have a look at him under the bed . We pulled the mattress up a bit as he is right up the far side of it

He was v responsive and as we stroked him did his usual trick or rolling over to have his tummy tickled

Seems quite normal but just wants to be under the bed ?’

OP "Seems quite normal but just wants to be under the bed ?’"

Is that like a safe space after a shock? Seems likely.

Poor kitty and poor you, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Yeah it’s where he went a lot as a young kitty when we first got him .

Must post a pic actually 😍

If you’re worried, I would give your vet a call and speak to the out of hours vet for reassurance. Form my recollection (when our kitten leapt out of first floor window) the biggest risk is to the roof of their pallette - the shock wave from landing can cause it to split & that can cause real problems. As you’ve had your kitten checked out by vet, that isn’t a concern here. It is such a shock when it happens. Our kitten was fine and it is lovely to hear your kitten is showing every sign of being ok.

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 21:34

Thanks )

He’s 8 months old , btw, a teenager not a toddler (thank goodness !) x

The first week I got my cats, one got out on the upstairs windowledge and when I tried to get her (stupidly) she freaked out and fell off. I ran down those stairs fully expecting to find a dead cat, but she was totally fine.

Keep an eye on him but it sounds like he is fine xxx

CoastalWave · 14/01/2022 21:38

My 1 yr old kitten fell from the first floor window on the concrete below.

He was absolutely fine. I was a mess however!

Keep an eye on them though like everyone else has already said.

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 21:40

I have literally been a total mess all day , fab into the vet sobbing this morning .omg they weee soooo lovely

My kids think I am massively overreacting

I actually feel like I let a baby fall from so high !

hamsterchump · 14/01/2022 21:42

My cat fell out the upstairs window onto a wood and cane folding chair. The chair frame cracked and buckled but he was ok, just a small cut on his back leg (little scar with no fur now) that healed fine with no intervention. Apparently because of their self righting system they're actually safer falling from some higher heights than very low ones as they don't have time to right themselves. Hopefully yours will be fine OP, just down one life of the nine.

coastergirl · 14/01/2022 21:45

I actually gasped when I read your post! It does sound like he's ok. When one of my cats was a kitten, he got his jaw stuck open on his collar somehow (no collars ever since). He was fine, but also hid away afterwards. A photo would be lovely. I really hope he's ok.
