Elderly cat struggling to groom

My cat is quite elderly and has arthritis. He's been struggling with his grooming recently. We have been brushing him to help. Hes not very tolerant at the best of times but his arthritis is playing him up bit and we dont want to hurt him.
Hes up to date with his flea treatment and doesnt have ant obvious signs of fleas but he has a build up of flea dirt. Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to clean him up?
We are trying him on the new monthly injections for arthritis but it is still early days.

Poor kitty, flea dirt can inky be removed with warm water or wipes if he can no longer lick it off himself. Would ge tolerate a warm flannel.
