Feeling sad and trapped today.

We rescued a homeless street cat 5 years ago in an emergency situation. He was living near a 4 lane busy road so dangerous I am surprised he didn't get run over.
This was only 6 weeks after my beloved soul cat had to be put to sleep due to kidney failure. My fault entirely, I should have said no. From day 1 I knew it was a mistake. He hid, was scared, nasty, lashed out. I have virtually no bond with him. 5 years down the line it's still the same.
He was free, but over the years has cost us thousands of pounds in vets bills. I think
he associates us with pain, illness and vet visits. He's always missing, we drag him back he goes again. He givs nothing of himself no affection just indifference or aggression
At the moment he's got cat flu, which is so
awful, plus some sort of gastric problems resulting in constant diarrhoea. He's fully vaccinated, up to date with flea treatment, wormers etc. Neutered and chipped, wears a collar. We have done everything in our power to help him.
The thought of years and years ahead like this is awful.
When I read these posts on here about how much their cats are loved, I feel so guilty also a bit jealous. I'm a cat owner of 40 years, had 5 previous cats who I loved completely. I would have been very judgemental of my post had I read it years ago.
I just feel down and trapped by him
The constant horrendous litter trays don't help at the moment. 5 or 6 complete changes a day. How do I get over this and tell myself off about tbese awful feelings? Thank you for reading.

What a patient and lovely cat owner you are, your boy is lucky to have you. I am glad to see he is a bit better and the fact he slept on your bed says alot about what he feels for you. You did an amazing thing rescuing your boy, and, should be proud of what you have done for him. It warms my heart to read stories like this.

@Clarich007

Sorry, just realised you aren't allowed pets
Yes, and as we (obviously) don't have a cat flap, she climbs up the tree, then the building on the outside, and comes in through open casement windows! She never asks for food just sometimes for water.

Thank you Rupertpenrysmistress.
That's so kind of you.

last night he slept on the bed with us, was tucked into my side with my arm round him

Oh that is lovely. It'll be interesting to see if he does it more often.

You're doing a wonderful job with him, so many people wouldn't have bothered.

I took in a neighborhood cat about four years ago. He had a home, but he didn’t have good care or affection and was very skinny. I have spent four years trying to bring him around to normal cat behaviour and affection. He has come so far, but will never be as affectionate as the other cats I’ve had. Its something that can’t be changed, but the care and affection I’ve given him makes me feel good. He hasn’t been neglected and he’s been comfortable and well fed. He’s had a much better life, as your cat has also had.

Hi OP. I posted above without reading the entire thread. In reading further about all of your cat’s health issues, I have to think his quality of life can’t be very good. You have been very kind to this poor kitty.

Thank you Starbucks.
I've tried my best, it's not been easy though.

Hi Lauren
That's very true. He will never be a knee cat or affectionate, but I don't think he would survived on the streets given his health issues. I did ask the vet last week about his quality of life and he said he's still fairly young.. 7-8, is strong and muscular, so he said every chance of him recovering.
Thank you for your lovely comments

Some cats aren't overly affectionate and him having been feral will be a big factor. I adopted my current cat when she was nearly 9. She's a pedigree house cat and a breed which is known for being affectionate. I'm her 4th home but she was always cared for but it took 18 months before she would sit on my lap.

Thats so good to hear StarbucksSmarter Sister, so glad you adopted her. It's amazing how long it takes for some little cats to trust us.
