Too little food? Republic of Cats

KeyLimePies · 27/10/2021 09:13

I’ve just signed up for an offer at Republic of cats for 2 weeks worth of food for £1.

My cat is a 9yr old neutered moggy who is on the chunky side at 5+ kilos. He goes outside a few times a day, and is indoors when I am out of the house. I want him to lose weight (he’s always been big).

His feeding plan with RoC is 1 tin of wet food a day and 1 tablespoon of dry food. I can’t see the weight of the canned food but it looks like a small tuna can size.

Surely this isn’t enough food per day even for a dieting cat?

I’ve posted on here before about his weight and got absolutely slated and called cruel for ‘only’ giving him 85g wet food and as much dry food as he wanted (about 40g). The problem was that my NDN was also feeding him and refused to stop, so I had to cut down on what I gave him. NDN says he has stopped feeding him now so I upped his food to 2 pouches, plus dry food a day based on the backlash I got on MN.

Is the RoC plan measly or am I feeding him far too much?

The RoC food is denser in nutrition so he won't need as much. They don't need as much as you think, particularly if he's on a weight loss programme. Just monitor his weight on the new regime and ensure he's losing steadily, but not rapidly.

The higher quality the food, the less they need to feel full.

@icedcoffees

The higher quality the food, the less they need to feel full.
Tell that to my two!
KeyLimePies · 27/10/2021 22:23

Will feed him the recommended amount when it arrives and see how we go.

Although I’m already anticipating puss’s evil glares. Hopefully he won’t move in to NDN’s in a huff 😾

I'd check whether 141 kcals per day is sufficient for your cat. It doesn't seem a lot to me

Toddlerteaplease · 26/11/2021 15:08

How do people get on with this? I seem to have just signed up for a trial. I asked if it was cereal free and they said it was. But I see it has maize in it.

Allergictoironing · 26/11/2021 19:12

I've signed up & got the 2 packets, one for each of mine. I put that they do not need to lose weight, and they've suggested 1 can & 2 tablespoons of dry for Girlcat, and 1 can & 3 tablespoons dry for Boycat. I've been trying different foods lately (Sheba terrine/pate seems to be on top so far), but usual rations were 1.5 pouches AGAIL between them (rarely finished) & about 100g dry (always ad lib).

However I've looked into stopping the Republic of cats thing before I have my first "proper" order as it seems a bit expensive, but can't see how to cancel?

Toddlerteaplease · 26/11/2021 20:23

I'm going to cancel as soon as I get my welcome pack. Hope it's easy.

Allergictoironing · 27/11/2021 08:14

That was my intention, but there's nothing obvious on the web site (surprise, surprise)

Toddlerteaplease · 27/11/2021 14:17

I don't know how I ended up putting cheddar down for wet food. She dies t like it. It will cost £13 a month for magic Nd £26 a month for Cheddar. If I just had one I would consider it. But it's too expensive for both of them.

KeyLimePies · 27/11/2021 18:10

I managed to cancel with no problem. He liked some of the tins, but not the pate ones. The tins held quite a lot of food though, so that was good.

I was browsing pets at home for higher end food and one brand (can’t remember which one) recommended 4 pouches a day for the average 4 kilo cat, which seems a lot. It’s so confusing.

@KeyLimePies can you just quickly run through the cancellation process please? I'm normally great at that kind of thing, but seem to have a blind spot with this one.

I'm also hunting for replacement wet food as they waste too much of the AGAIL they have been on. They do seem to quite like most of the Republic ones I've tried so far, but any with veg in them is making one of the cats throw up. And like Toddler, I feel it would be far too expensive!

Changecountetextraordinaire · 28/11/2021 08:29

Ours have a quarter of the really small tins (85g I think) and a heaped tbsp of dry food twice a day. And half a dozen dreamies each for supper Grin They are indoor cats, one is 3.7kg (m) the other 3.4kg (f).

At their annual vet visit the vet commented on how good their weight is for indoor cats, so it looks as if your instructions are correct.

The 4 pouches a day thing is ridiculous.

bruffin · 28/11/2021 08:45

I have 2 cats my 12 year old has always had a 85g pouch at 4 and a handful of dry in the morning which she goes through stages of being fussy about

My 3 yr old which adopted as a stray only eats dry. She has all the attributes of a Turkish van and is very solid ,has 2 bowls of dry a day and probably a mouse on top.

KeyLimePies · 28/11/2021 09:28

@Allergictoironing (so am I!) you do it via your account and it’s all online - no arguing with salespeople on the ‘phone

Instructions are here

Thanks KeyLimePies, all done. I'd somehow missed the "cancel" button!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 28/11/2021 22:51

I've cancelled my Republic of Cats as it doesn't suit my cat.
When she was on it she was very lethargic, not playing with her toys, sleeping loads & drinking lots of water. I think it was the biscuits that were affecting her.
Next door neighbours have had the same problem with their cat.
Now I've gone back to Felix & Go Cat biscuits my cat is her old self again & it's lovely to see.
Wish I'd never tried it!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2021 10:03

I think I've managed to cancel mine. They've not tried the food yet. But the treats have gone down very well. Can you just buy them on their own?

MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns · 04/12/2021 09:30

My cat is on that amount of RoC now. I had been giving him 2 cans and a bowl of biscuits as he was so vocal about being hungry, but he is pretty overweight now, so the diet has started. I had to reduce it over a number of days. He doesn't seem to have gone off me (yet).
