Why did my cat spray in front of us?

We adopted a 12 year old male Birman 6 months ago. He has been an absolute pleasure to have but last night right in front of us, he sprayed urine onto the kitchen units Shock
Has anyone got any advice as to why he would do this out of the blue?

Someone upset him?

violetbunny · 01/10/2021 10:00

Is there any chance he's having a health issue? If it's unusual behaviour for him I'd take him to the vet.

No solutions, but just letting you know it could be worse. I once had a Berman that sprayed my then DH 😹

I'd say urine infection?

Is he neutered? Was he a stud cat?
UTI?
Other cat encroaching on his territory?

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/10/2021 19:27

I’d get a wee sample off to the vet.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 01/10/2021 19:35

How do you get a wee sample from a cat?

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/10/2021 19:37

Leave them in a room with an empty tray, or use an oral syringe to suck up a puddle if it’s fresh or the vets can manually extract.

ImitationofBeing · 01/10/2021 19:37

Our cat used to do this when he had a UTI or he felt intimidated by a new cat on the block.

frazzledasarock · 01/10/2021 19:40

We had to get urine sample from our cat, had to put cotton wool balls in gb otter tray when he went to wee, then squeeze them into the sample tube the vet gave us.

frazzledasarock · 01/10/2021 19:40

Into the litter tray not otter tray 🤦🏻‍♀️

torquewench · 01/10/2021 20:48

In my case it was because exH had been fussing over his parents dog all day (t'was Boxing Day, at their house, dog was v malodorous), so maybe there's a scent your cat is picking up somewhere?
