Catteries not allowing own beds due to Covid?

The cattery where my cats usually go to, are not permitting the cats to have their own beds. I asked today if they were going to review their policy, and she said no.

I think there is very little evidence that Covid is transmissible via a pet bed, and I said so. I said that was a pity as the cats find comfort in familiar beds.

Owner said that she doesn’t find comfort in the risk of catching Covid. I had to bite my lip. And actually wanted to stab her.

They now ask you to open car boot, and they will take the baskets out. So no meeting in the office like before. Fine by me. All I want to do is hand over two cat beds. I’m not asking to go into the premises.

So, I’m asking if anyone else has similar rules at catteries? I think the owner is OTT, and I’m going to look at other catteries.

I haven't heard of this. I wouldn't use this cattery - would find another one.

Also annoyed, that “due to Covid”, appointments are required for drop off and pick up. So next week I leave Cumbria, with a journey of 280 miles on motorways to Surrey. Not really predictable! “I’ve booked you in for 4.15”.

It does seem a bit OTT, but then so does wanting to stab her 🤷‍♀️

SoosanCarter · 18/09/2021 18:29

Thanks, Sleeping. There is one nearer that I’m going to check out.

Ours is the opposite, we had to bring own beds and scratching mats this time, never had to do that before.

PeonyTime · 18/09/2021 18:35

Our cattery is actually using our blankets, rather than theirs. Thankfully, there are 2 blankets in the base of the cat carrier, so DC had some, as I wasnt aware of that change.
So, totally the opposite situation.

SoosanCarter · 18/09/2021 18:36

One of my cats over-grooms and bites her fur. I think her own bed would help. And it’s really expensive which I don’t mind but to not have their own beds?

This.

I don't think the cattery I used had this rule but my cats don't really have their own bedding as they sleep all over the place. I definitely took them in and went in to pick them up though.

They are entitled to have their own rules based on what they are comfortable with though. Just as you are entitled to decide it's not what you want.

Your cats actually sleep in a bed at home? That you have provided? An actual cat bed? Blimey.

I've provided cat beds galore over the years and they have almost universally treated them with utter disdain. The four felines I can see at the moment are all currently sleeping on:

A cardboard box full of old junk that is due to go in the loft,
An armchair,
A dining chair,
The floor by the back door.

Other favourite places include my head and the bird table.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/09/2021 21:00

I’m sure it’s just a figure is speech, ops unlikely to go to the cattery tooled up.

A lot of people are pissed off these days.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 18/09/2021 21:20

Wtf is she licking the cat beds?!

Flopsie21 · 18/09/2021 21:24

Completely barmy 😂😂😂 if the cat bed harbours covid so does the cat ROFL!!!!!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/09/2021 22:48

Mine allows anything in. But can't go into the pens and settle them in, as I usually would. Not that they notice. Magic only has eyes for one of the ladies who works there. She gets the quivery tail, happy magic purr machine. I never do!

Well exactly! Utterly bonkers!
CoffeeRunner · 19/09/2021 05:41

Ours was the opposite too this August/September. They asked for their own beds/blankets & toys.

We did also hand them over outside which was fine. We had the same chat we would normally have in the office but outside the office. We couldn't take them into their room but the owner did send us a photo of them settled in later that evening.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 19/09/2021 07:26

EssentiallyDisorganised · 19/09/2021 07:31

Ours allows own bedding and blankets but we've always had to hand over the cats in their carrier outside the building and always has to make drop-off and pick-up appointments so I assumed that was normal. The owner only wants one customer at a tile so she can unbox and settle each cat before the next ones arrive, have a chat with the owner and do the reverse on pickup. She always has the girls boxed up ready and waiting when we arrive. It works really well.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/09/2021 07:36

Surely the cats themselves would be a greater risk?

Oldraver · 19/09/2021 08:54

So after reading this Ive just spent a while searching for a similar blankie to the one the kittens have comandeered

SoosanCarter · 19/09/2021 08:57

Thanks all. You’ve confirmed that the policy is barmy!

Mumdiva99 · 20/09/2021 18:57

We got our cats during lockdown so don't know how it was before. We had to make appointments to drop and collect the cats, take their bed, scratch post, toys and food (if they didn't stock it). We took the cats into reception and left them there.

ImInStealthMode · 20/09/2021 19:04

Ours either provides the basics or lets you arrive with your own kit and kaboodle. Dcat takes his scratch post hammock thing, a blanket, food dishes and toys.

Only thing that's changed now is distanced drop off and pick ups. I'd find another less weirdly paranoid cattery OP.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 20/09/2021 21:01

She sounds nuts. Ask for the evidence to back her claim up. She's being utterly ridiculous. Funny how she's happy to have your cat and money though. Don't use her again.
