Kitten spending most of its time on the landing?

Kitten has decided the landing outside DDs room is where it wants to sleep at night and hang out during the day. I felt so bad that I gave it a little box that was up there. Now it spends 80% of its time in the box.

It does have a good vantage point in terms of listening to everything that's going on, but still. Should I be worried?

Last 2 nights he didn't even bother to come down when we were watching TV, even though we left the living room door open a bit.

Aww he's cute! Is he fine otherwise? Eating, drinking, pooping? Even playing when you are not around?

If everything else is fine, I wouldn't worry too much. Just tempt him out gently with treats or interesting toys and slowly move them closer and closer to the stairs. And then maybe down the steps...

How old is he?

NutellaEllaElla · 16/09/2021 12:00

Aww looks like he loves his little box. Are you worried that he's anxious? Will he come out to play and eat etc?

ElspethFlashman · 16/09/2021 12:02

He was a bit off colour Monday, which I attribute to his very first bit of roast chicken. He shit all over the upstairs bathroom, presumably caught too short to go downstairs to his litter tray, so we've had to put a litter tray up there. He still pooed on the floor this morning but on the upside there was also poo in the litter tray so hopefully he'll keep using that now.

But he's a lot brighter yesterday and today.

Now that he has a litter tray up there though he doesn't seem to go downstairs unless there's activity. We keep the bedroom doors closed during the day and he would probably be on one of the beds otherwise but what I can't figure out is how a landing is more comfy that the 2 empty sofas we have downstairs!

He is still looking for affection but only on his terms! When you want to cuddle him he trots off but when you're too busy he's headbutting you and yelling! Confused

That's my cat's favourite spot too. There must be a warm pipe or something under the flooring.

Beamur · 16/09/2021 12:10

Yep. Water pipes. He's homed in on a warm spot.
Cats always want attention when you're busy.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 16/09/2021 12:10

All of my cats sleep on the landing, it’s quiet, warm and comfy they are quite happy. Kittens sleep loads too mine are bigger now (1.5) still sleep a lot

Mumdiva99 · 16/09/2021 12:11

Cute cat in a box. How old is he? Is he tiny and do the stairs worry him?

One of my cats spent all last winter sleeping in her bed on the landing. She's only used it a few nights this month....never over the summer.

My other cat sleeps on the carpet - when she isn't on my daughters bed....why? She has access to beds, cat beds, cat trees, we put blankets down in her favourite spots and she ignores them!!

As your kitten has been poorly keep an eye on her. Make sure she's drinking. Play with her when she's better.

Classic cat behaviour.

My cats have always preferred to be upstairs. I dunno why.

How old is he? Mine did have accidents for a little bit. They can get funny tummies when they’re little I think.

ElspethFlashman · 16/09/2021 12:38

He's gosh let me think...we say his birthday was June 1st for approximation so 4.5 months?

He initially spent a lot of time downstairs but as he's clocked that we sleep upstairs he's started to favour it 24/7.

Ive just realised that there's no carpet downstairs whereas we have carpet and underlay up here. It's possibly just warmer.

Good to know your cats all favour the landing too!

It's a bit of a shame in the evenings though. I kinda got a cat partly to cuddle on the sofa of an evening - oh well!

I too have a landing cat, in her case it's a combo of vantage point - probably your kitten likes that - warmth from a radiator she sleeps below, and seclusion from house activities which can get a bit much for her.

I have also put in applications for evening cuddles who have so far been rejected.

Cats, huh!

Yep, 2 of mine love the landing, its a spot to hear everything that's going on on the house!

Mumdiva99 · 16/09/2021 12:57

Didn't we all get cats for cat cuddles? Mine rarely want them from me....apart from Silky who always wants strokes. Bobbi almost hates me...she's been known to jump over me to get to the kids. Apart from this Monday morning from 9-9:25....when I was allowed to stroke her, pick her up and cuddle her and then sit with her on my lap!!! Normal service has been resumed since then. Here's Bobbi on the chair - this is a new sitting spot for her.

I think they also like to be higher up, so they can watch out for danger, or maybe just nosy and don't want to miss anything.

NutellaEllaElla · 16/09/2021 13:00

Yeah I don't get cat cuddles on the sofa downstairs much, but they love chilling on the bed with me.

maofteens · 16/09/2021 13:03

I have two five month old kitties. At night they sleep either on my bed (with me and two dogs) or their cat tower, or outside my daughters loft bedroom (the dogs don't go up there).
But during the day they are wherever I am and really don't stop moving, occasional naps but as soon as any activity they are in there for a piece of the action! But cats are all different and maybe yours is a loner.

Another888 · 16/09/2021 13:07

I once dropped a jay cloth on the landing and didn't pick it up straight away as my arms were full. Now it's my cat's favourite most beloved bed and I can never move it.

thatsalovelystapler · 16/09/2021 13:23

@OneMoreForExtra your cat is a beauty!

My cat visitor used to sleep in the hall in the middle of a doorway as the central heating pipes went underneath!

OneMoreForExtra · 16/09/2021 14:27

thatsalovely she is, but don't be fooled, she's pure feline badness
