The breeder lied!

We bought a kitten that was meant to be two breeds. I did find it strange that the breeder didnt have a picture of the dad cat but she was adamant that she knew his breed and that our kitten was exactly that. She had sent me loads of videos and pictures of the kittens older siblings so I decided to not doubt her.

We took the kitten home and he is lovely. He has integrated really well and gets on with my children just fine. But we have just taken him to the vets and she has confirmed she doesnt think that the breed we have been told and paid for is true. I was also sceptical and was looking up google images of this other certain breed and the kittens look nothing alike. The breeder seemed so trust worthy! She was really nice and asked to keep in touch and send photos of him as he grows up. I actually chatted to the breeder quite alot and she doesnt come across like the type of person to scam.

What should I do? Should I bother bringing it up with the owner. I'm just really upset as I specially set out for this type of breed as I loved the temperament and characteristics that came with it. I feel cheated with my money but my children have already taken to the kitten and so have I...

@Furries we got our kitten at 10 weeks. He is 11 now. I assume she had the sold from 9 weeks. I agree the longer with the mum the better now looking back on with hindsight but when I did my research everywhere had mixed opinions of 8 to 12 weeks being acceptable.

I would of loved to adopt and checked out many sanctuaries however my dp wanted to buy. Especially because we already had a dog and cat and children most cats/kittens I saw would only be acceptable in a living condition in a mature family on their own which limited us greatly. The only cat we would of really been allowed is a "farm cat" and I preferable wanted a semi indoor family cat for my children to grow up with. If I was on my own I would happily have a cat sanctuary 😂

I understand what you mean though about some of these breeders. When we was looking it was between our current kitten and another one. The breeder of the other kitten we saw said her popr queen cat had been pregnant 4 times and she suspected was pregnant again when we was there. She claimed that she was trying to get her done but she would get out and come back pregnant everytime. Even my eyebrows were raining at the genuineness behind that. She also said she had given the kitten flea and worming but when we was saw him and gave him a pet the poor thing had fleas crawling under his neck and flea eggs. It was a shame because he was so sweet and my dp loved him but I said I couldnt buy off someone like that no matter if I just wanted to save the poor little guy. This breeder that we bought our kitten off seemed alot more sincere and the past queens litter was all off a substantial age that made me feel like she wasnt just getting her pregnant all the time.

@Puditt
You can usually tell if they have maine coon in them even in a kitten but not if the kitten is too young. They shouldn’t leave their mother until at least 12 weeks. By this time, you should be able to see the usual fluffiness and long hair of a main coon. Just because they don’t look like a main coon though doesn’t mean they won’t have some of the characteristics of one. I think 11 weeks is still too young to see those characteristics in all honesty. My two girls are typical main coon but they aren’t going to be big, I can tell that already. One chirrups lots and the other hardly at all. One loves cuddles at any time and the other isn’t so keen…it has to be on her terms. They are both VERY greedy lol! Every cat is different and as long as you love yours, that’s the main thing.

MoggyP · 18/07/2021 08:38

That reminds me, some friends got a puppy born of 2 moggy dogs (is the term still moggy?)

It would be mutt, or maybe Heinz (57 varieties in there), or occasionally a bitzer (bits of this, bits of that)

Even if the breeder had showed OP a photo, that would not be a guarantee that the at in the picture had ever met her queen. If you want a particular breed, then you need a pedigree with papers. Or one where the mother is the breed you want, because then at least you know it's in the mix somewhere.

But crosses can take after either parent, and in varying ways. You can never be sure what a mog will be like - you just have to enjoy him as he is.

@Puditt Can we see a picture? Smile

I can't have pets now Sad but I'll pay my tax with my mum's Biscuit

Yes. We need a picture or we will revoke your membership in the litter tray Grin

Furries · 18/07/2021 11:12

@Puditt - at the end of the day, I’m sure your kitten will have you wrapped around your paws in no time!

Sorry that I got a bit rants in my post, I’m normally easy going but seem to have an “easy to get annoyed” button when it comes to cats (and dogs) coming from certain circumstances.

Am glad you didn’t buy the other kitten. And I know I’d find that situation difficult too - the urge to get it away from them vs not wanting them to profit from me. Given you have their contact info/address, I would seriously consider reporting them - they will not know that the report came from you. Otherwise, there are going to be plenty more kittens in that state.

As others have said, photos are required - themes the rules here!

Furries · 18/07/2021 11:13

Wrapped around its paws, not your paws!

Furries · 18/07/2021 11:14

And apologies for my typos. I’m on an iPad which deems it necessary to decide which words I should be posting 🤦🏻‍♀️

MathsFail · 18/07/2021 11:16

Be thankful he's a nice cat and loves you.

I paid £400 for a BSH years ago and he hates us Sad 😂

He moved I to the neighbours house, a retired gentleman with no kids around.

Tried a dozen times to bring him home and as soon as a windows open off he goes! Back to his 'chosen owner'

Puditt · 18/07/2021 11:23

@Soubriquet @grey12 here is my not so fluffy meant to maine coon kitten 😂

Ideasplease322 · 18/07/2021 11:35

He is gorgeous. Worth every penny. How could you ever be unhappy with that little angel 😍

MathsFail · 18/07/2021 11:38

Awww he's lovely but just looks like a normal 30 quid cat

hilariousnamehere · 18/07/2021 11:38

@Puditt I don't have much to add to pps advice, but I can tell you my fluffy girl surprised me with her fluffiness - she was just a little scrap when she arrived. Will try and post pics. Her sister is a black short haired moggie (same litter although no one ever believes they're sisters) and at six months they were quite similar in build. Now she's massive and fluffy and magnificent and her sister is sleek and shiny and not at all fluffy!

Not sure what order pics will post but there's a small kitty at six months when she and her sister came home to me from the rescue, one of her lounging in her car tree and one on the sofa to show her fluffy tail. So you never know!

Rescues round here ask for £90 for kittens
We paid £150 to someone for our moggie who is gorgeous as it happens

It was just a family - friend of a friend - who were having one litter from their family pet.
I know it was a bit much, but with people asking £3-400 for moggies on pets4homes and Facebook etc I felt it was ok.

I dread to think what you were charged OP but I’m not sure there can be comeback as you didn’t ask for proof of the dad abs she may not have been deliberately lying just shouldn’t have guaranteed it.

Very cute kitten, but I have to concur that he looks like a black moggy.

I have three black mogs (and one grey) - wouldn't swap them for the world.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2021 11:47

This was her when we first got her, so you can see how much she has changed in the 5(!) years we’ve had her

Rescues are £90 for kittens here. I've owned Mane Coons in the past. They are fabulous cats but silly money. Anything crossbred will be a gamble. Cat genetics are complicated and at a basic level MC are just big moggies from countries with cold climate. Mine had dodgy kidneys as there is was outcrossing with Persians in the past. Lovely cats though.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/07/2021 13:04

Yy, Dd's mog, the ginger one was £100, the MC was £750.
Ouch!

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/07/2021 13:07

This is her at around 18 weeks.

My parents had 2 Maine coon kittens from a rescue. They weren’t sure if they were full or part Maine coon as one was huge and looked like the typical Maine coon cat and one was tiny and had very short fur. The small one stayed small for ages and then all of a sudden grew into a beautiful obviously vet Maine coon cat so give it time and you might be surprised.
