The breeder lied!

We bought a kitten that was meant to be two breeds. I did find it strange that the breeder didnt have a picture of the dad cat but she was adamant that she knew his breed and that our kitten was exactly that. She had sent me loads of videos and pictures of the kittens older siblings so I decided to not doubt her.

We took the kitten home and he is lovely. He has integrated really well and gets on with my children just fine. But we have just taken him to the vets and she has confirmed she doesnt think that the breed we have been told and paid for is true. I was also sceptical and was looking up google images of this other certain breed and the kittens look nothing alike. The breeder seemed so trust worthy! She was really nice and asked to keep in touch and send photos of him as he grows up. I actually chatted to the breeder quite alot and she doesnt come across like the type of person to scam.

What should I do? Should I bother bringing it up with the owner. I'm just really upset as I specially set out for this type of breed as I loved the temperament and characteristics that came with it. I feel cheated with my money but my children have already taken to the kitten and so have I...

But you knew he was a cross? The breeder could absolutely be telling the truth. The MC traits could very easily have been lost to the traits of the mother. You knew he was a moggy and you have one, so there is absolutely nothing you can do, and the breeder has done nothing wrong. It was up to you to research before hand.
I have a ragdoll cross, I've met both parents - and looking at my girl you wouldn't know she has ragdoll in her, but her dad is a full pedigree ragdoll. Enjoy your kitten for what he is and let this go. You know next time to research.

I have a Maine coon cross British short hair. She cost me £60

She has a lot of the Maine coon characteristics. She chirrups a lot but she does meow too when she really wants to. Prefers to chirrup more. She’s long coated but she’s not as big or the traditional colours of a Maine coon. She doesn’t have much in her for the BSH

She’s very affectionate and a lovely little cat but I’m fully aware she’s a moggy

@stellaisabella her silver eyes are adorable! I'm a sucker for silver cats 😂 I understand what your saying. I guess appearance why I just had an expectation of a fluff ball but our kitten isnt ... yet. His mums breed is fluffy as well though so I am abit perplexed by this. I will just love him for who he is. He is a great kitty

@Soubriquet I'm secretly glad I started this thread because I'm just loving all the cute cat pics (keep them coming guys) 😂 you can defiently see the maine coon in her build! But wow 60 is so cheap. I guess I'd be a little less up in arms about it If that was close to what we paid but we paid a great more than that

@Puditt as I have discovered. Pure breeds can come with a lot of issues. Mixed breeds are often healthier. My friend had a Persian/ Selkirk Rex cross. And she's a beautiful cat with features of both breeds, but none of the issues.

Wolfiefan · 16/07/2021 12:41

If you wanted a certain pedigree then you should have contacted a proper breeder. This wasn’t.

Soubriquet · 16/07/2021 12:41

It’s hard with cats. They go either cheap as chips or lots of money for specific breeds.

Im sure your lovely boy will be priceless regardless of how much you paid for him.

Emmelina · 16/07/2021 12:42
@FatCatThinCat that's really strange! I didn't know that. So they can have a mixed litter from different dads?
It’s true! Cats have a sort of barbed hooked willy to try and get out any other cats sperm on the backstroke (sorry, for want of a better description), but obviously some already gets in there at the eggs.

Beamur · 16/07/2021 12:45

A moggy from a rescue will cost you £60 plus now.
There's a lot more variable traits with cats. I have 2 oriental short haired cats. Same coat colour as their Dad. Not a single kitten in that litter had the same coat colour as Mum, 2 of the kittens had coats unlike either parent.
My fluffy moggy was the only semi long haired one in her litter. Mum was smooth coated.
Yes female cats can give birth to litters fathered by more than one male too. Weird huh!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/07/2021 12:51

You didn't pay for a breed though. If you wanted a maine coon you should have paid for a maine coon. You can never tell what a mixed bred will look like anyway.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/07/2021 12:55

Have a look at breed rescues. My friend had two full Maine coone from a pedigree rescue. And I've had three stunning Persians from a Persian rescue.

Tavelo · 16/07/2021 13:07

If it's any consolation moggies are healthier and live longer. Breeders might think they know what they're doing but they're not gods. They can't control how genes work with each litter. If it's a mog you'll probably save as much in vets bills.

YelloYelloYello · 16/07/2021 13:18

I assume you paid quite a bit? So on that basis I think you should say something to the breeder.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/07/2021 13:19

@Puditt
So do we get a picture of your kitten? The litter tray demands this as tax Grin

cobblers123 · 16/07/2021 13:24

I had two half Siamese brother and sister. Mum Siamese, no idea what dad was. Male black and white, clingy, very noisy, female beige/grey and white, not very affectionate but gorgeous to look at. Both had Pointed faces and ears and very sleek build.

Wish I knew what the dad looked like though.

HopeHappy · 16/07/2021 14:20

Even if the kitten was advertised as a moggy, the prices are crazy right now.

We adopted a 9 month old kitten from a rescue last year. Cost us £65. The previous owner that had given her up had spent £600! She's just a bog standard moggy (though a v cute one, I grant you!).

@Puditt - the money's gone now and you were happy with the kitten when you bought it. It might leave a bit of a sour taste, but ultimately you now have a very cute new family member, which to me is priceless.

warmfluffytowels · 16/07/2021 21:49

All our moggies cost us £10 each.

I don't understand paying for "mixed breed" cats. They're just moggies - I'm sorry you feel you were scammed or lied to, but you got what was advertised.

Furries · 17/07/2021 04:28

I’m confused as to how you went into this.

We thought we were getting two breeds (generally will be a moggie), but the vet has confirmed it wasn’t the breed we wanted (a MC).

Why didn’t you just research and register with genuine MC breeders?

MyMabel · 17/07/2021 05:05

Same, my kitten was a really fluffy kitten and advertised as a main coone.

Here she is now, in all her non-main coone glory.

I didn’t even buy her because of her breed, i just wanted a all-black cat and she was perfect.

But she’s perfect in every way and I’d never change her. Was just a bit miffed I was fibbed too!

I don’t know why three photo posted, I only sleep yes one and one only showed on my preview 😂

Pantene23 · 17/07/2021 06:03

I have moggies. Unwanted cats or kittens. The two biggest have Maine coon features so definitely some DNA in there. Mine all get on. Getting cats to get along isn’t breed specific. Also traits about your first Maine coon might just be personality and not DNA. Yes cats can be pregnant by different fathers. Even if the same father I took in a litter of four. Three were small and grey just like the mother. The fourth was twice the size, black and white, same markings as dad. I’ve been horrified at the cost of kittens and puppies during lockdown. Don’t buy into the mixed breed hype in the future.

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 17/07/2021 06:10

My rescue cat is part Maine Coone and won't tolerate any other cats, the aggressive little shit GrinConfusedConfused

I have no idea what MC traits are meant to be - mine is that he's a total mummy's boy - but I paid/donated £75 for him, and gave a poor little streetcat a better life. He would disagree as he only gets ONE breakfast GrinGrin

Icequeen01 · 17/07/2021 06:18

Mine are often mistaken for having Maine Coon in them but their mum was a Birman and dad was the local ginger Tom (the mum was found with her new born kittens in some outbuildings and taken into a rescue). There were 4 ginger fluffy kittens and one pure black one. They are totally worshipped in this house!

Sorry you didn't get what you thought you were getting but it still sounds as though you have a lovely cat. Enjoy!

Gubanc · 17/07/2021 06:34

I'm afraid you didn't buy from a 'breeder' at all. Unless it's a permitted outcrossing for a specific purpose, which doesn't sound like it is the case.
