Quick advice please, my boys are in for neutering this morning and I dont know whether they need to be nil by mouth this morning. There were no instructions from vet, but vet visit for pre assessment was literally car park handover, and my dh who took them was not involved in the consultation.

No breakfast! Its a full GA!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2021 06:30

NO BREAKFAST, NO WATER.

Ga= general anaesthetic. They will be offered food after the op at the vets so can make up for it then. Very remiss of the vets not to inform you though.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2021 06:32

Sorry caps lock on no shouting. If they've had food or water cancel the op or they might choke under anaesthetic and inhale it into their lungs.
Very negligent of the vets not to give instructions.

cliffdiver · 07/07/2021 06:32

No breakfast.

They should not have had access to food overnight.

If they have, you need to call the vet and seek their advice.

Lonecatwithkitten · 07/07/2021 06:34

No breakfast, but they should have water right up to when they go the vets. Being properly hydrated is really important. We only remove fluids at premed now.

Keeponpottingon · 07/07/2021 06:48

Vet here, no food but ok for water until they are admitted. If they've had access to food overnight I would ring ahead and let the vets know, they may delay GA until later in the day.

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

NO BREAKFAST, NO WATER.
Water is absolutely fine!

But no food. They shouldn't have had access to food since around 6pm last night.

thecatneuterer · 07/07/2021 12:38

Water is fine. We say no food from midnight.

Thanks guys, also concerned we had no advice. Surgery was at 10am. They had supper 8pm last night, access to water overnight but I didnt give them breakfast. They looked at me like they'd been betrayed!
