Cat not venturing out of our garden

We adopted a rescue cat a few weeks ago and she's been going out now for a couple of weeks.
She's 11 months and previous to being with us she had never been outside so it's all new to her.
She very cautious still and only really goes out into the garden if one of us does. And then she stays quite close by us, apart from dusk when she's out running around on her own like a mad thing and doesn't want to come in.
Thankfully so far she's not ventured outside of our garden. Do some cats only ever stay so close or do you think she'll get braver and will wander more eventually?
I've only ever had cats that go out and aren't seen for a few hours.

No, all cats are different! Some hate the inside, some hate the outside, and everything in between.

But also - it's only a few weeks, it's all still so new. Maybe she just doesn't like it, or it's too hot, or she's nervous, or there are other cat smells around that she's not sure of, or...

Have just seen your update.
Beautiful. I have a similar one!

FlyingFlamingo · 17/06/2021 19:54

Mine don’t go far. One hardly leaves the garden at all, the other (who looks very like yours) goes next door to wind their dog up and then comes home again. I think they are both too scared they’ll miss a feed to wander too far Grin

My last rescue cat seldom left the garden..occasionally spotted over the road ( naughty ) or in the field next to us. she used to follow us though walking up to school or the local shop. lovely cat.
Our new rescue also seldom leaves the garden but is more aloof and refuses to follow us anywhere.

berylandcynthia · 17/06/2021 19:56

Actually I lie new rescue cat goes next door to terrorise their cat.,who used to come in our garden all the time, but now doesn't

gurglebelly · 17/06/2021 19:57

Our cats do go further than the garden, but boy cat much prefers it if we are out with him. She'll settle into whatever she feels most comfortable with, but it's only been a few weeks

My house cat has just started going out, she is in our garden the majority of the time but disappears off for about 15 minutes at a time...she's only out when we're out though and often potters back inside for a lie down

Cattitudes · 17/06/2021 20:03

One of ours sounds very much like yours and even if she is out will come bounding up to us as soon as we go outside. Currently sitting waiting for us to have supper. The only member of the family who I can rely on to always turn up on time. Had her nearly seven years now and I don't think she has ever gone further than next door (two different houses).

TerritorialPissings · 17/06/2021 20:05

We recently moved house and since that time, our cats will not leave the garden either. In our last house, one of the cats was known throughout the village as she was such an explorer, but she’s changed loads since we’ve lived here. I actually quite like knowing where they are at all times 😂

Your cat is beautiful

I've two rescues. The female stays around the house and garden and spends a lot of time being near me.

The male wanders further but the female is fierce about protecting her territory from other cats.

Billybagpuss · 17/06/2021 20:19

Ours started off as house cats, when we put the flap in, neither are that bothered about leaving the garden.

Have some pics

Thanks all. I'd love her to always stay close by so I don't have to worry about where she is but I guess only time will tell.
She's very attached to her humans as she's always in a room near one of us and is the same in the garden.
She's such a sweetheart, we're all besotted with her. We've not had cats for quite a few years and I'm so glad I decided to get one again, they're such great characters.

My Beatrix is also a rescue cat. She's 18 months old and never goes for more than 20 minutes. Now I'm working at home and it's lovely and warm I have the patio doors open and she wanders in and out. She will jump on the table purring let me stroke her ( as she is checking I'm still there) then off she goes again outside . I don't think she goes far, the neighbours gardens and our garden

Mine have never gone far; maybe into next door's garden but not much further. They're so old and stuff now I don't think they could get over the fence even if they wanted too.

lunar1 · 17/06/2021 20:39

I've had my little rescue 17 years, she will potter round the garden with me, but has no interest in being out on her own or venturing anywhere.
