Hi all,

I just wanted to share this Facebook group:

www.facebook.com/groups/806871953557080/?ref=share

I had my darling cat pass away a few weeks ago completely out of the blue due to low blood count.

The vet mentioned there had been an upsurge in cases and this group suggests it is linked to grain free / hypoallergenic food.

Please please share so now one else has to go through this x

I buy the Applaws food from Amazon and this evening did a live chat and explained the product had been recalled, they offered me a refund straight away.

Sunny4876 · 15/06/2021 22:11

Thank you so so much,my bag is one of those affected.

TheSpottedZebra · 15/06/2021 22:33

OP I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat.
Thank you for sharing this issue with us - I'd not heard anything about it before. I hope it receives wider press coverage. I'm using a Sainsbury's food, but not the hypoallergenic one. But i will check the factory code just in case.

Hannah939 · 15/06/2021 22:40

Hi, my cats are on applaws dry chicken and salmon, have stopped feeding immediately but I don’t have the bag to check the batch/factory code. Don’t know whether to go straight to the vets in the morning 😣 has anyone else bought any from zooplus with this code?

mygee · 15/06/2021 22:47

Their gums looks fine to me I think- hard to know what's normal though.

The bag we've been using isn't one of the best before dates listed for the recall (best before Nov 2022, recall is from Dec 2022 so June 2023 so only a month out) so I'm not sure how worried I should be. I won't be feeding it to them of course. The new bag we have is on the recall list, so I'm glad we hadn't opened it yet!

Ibizafun · 15/06/2021 23:14

Op I feed the Applaws salmon & chicken mixed with other dry food. No words enough to thank you. I will be checking the barcode in the morning but if unsure will just throw the whole lot away.

BogHead · 15/06/2021 23:46

Thank you so much for this information and so sorry OP.

@hannah939 we buy from Zooplus, our bag has a FR code thank goodness. Hopefully they source all their Applaws from the same factory and your cat/cats are ok too.

Hannah939 · 15/06/2021 23:49

@BogHead thank you 😊 can I ask when you bought this bag? I have seen on Facebook some people have bought from zooplus and it has the affected code on it 😞 I bought this one in may

slavetothekittens · 16/06/2021 06:36

I bought my affected bag from Zooplus about 2 weeks ago....Applaws chicken. Am just so grateful I haven't used it and I'm so very sorry for all the people and their beloved cats who have been affected by this.

Sunny4876 · 16/06/2021 06:48

@Hannah939 yes unfortunately mine was from zooplus I bought it 2 weeks ago.

bringonyourwreckingball · 16/06/2021 06:52

My nearly 2 year old beloved moggie died out of the blue with similar symptoms recently. He was on Iams dry and Felix wet. Vet suggested it was auto immune.

Oldraver · 16/06/2021 08:22

@Moggymoggymogmogs

Ffs. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do with a 7.5kg sack of cat food that's been recalled???
I still have most of a 7.5 kg bag but it's been debated into a big tub so I don't know the code but will hang onto it for now
EachandEveryone · 16/06/2021 09:34

Does anyone know if Encore are affected? I can’t find the code on the packet it’s so dark.

Cakemonger · 16/06/2021 10:24

My cats have been on one of the affected Ava foods for the past month. I'm going out to buy them a different brand today - are Royal Canin and Purina equally good? Can anyone recommend a decent quality brand that isn't too expensive?

So worrying :(

slavetothekittens · 16/06/2021 10:26

@EachandEveryone, doesn't seem to be. I have two bags of Encore for the kittens and both are DE factory codes.

viques · 16/06/2021 14:59

BBC news page has a list of affected products.

Sympathies to anyone whose cat has been affected.

Spyro1234 · 16/06/2021 15:21

My friend has lost two cats to this, both ate the Sainsbury's food and passed away within 6 days of each other. only young cats 😭

SirVixofVixHall · 16/06/2021 15:30

Really frightening, what on earth could be causing it ?

Hannah939 · 16/06/2021 15:36

@Sunny4876 thanks, really hoping mine was the french code 😢 I have moved them on to scrumbles as I think they have their own factory? I took my two cats to the vets today anyway for blood tests and all is good for now. Fingers crossed for everyone’s cats 🥺

Chemenger · 16/06/2021 15:47

Thanks for this, I have passed it on to my CP branch.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 16/06/2021 16:18

I feed my two cats Royal Canin but I've shared with all friends and family.

KatyMac · 16/06/2021 19:16

I checked the code and thought we were OK but Petsathome emailed me to ask me to return it for a refund

I'm not sure how many bags we have had but she has been on it since Feb

The Vet says it isnt likely that she has been affected but I'm not sure

InglouriousBasterd · 16/06/2021 19:52

God that page is so sad. What an absolute nightmare. Mine is on purina thankfully. Poor, poor cats and their owners Sad

mygee · 16/06/2021 20:08

Just sorted a refund for our unopened bag through Amazon.

The bag we've been using has a best before of November 2022 so not part of the recall but I can't help but worry anyway.

OH spoke to the vets and they'd just received information on it, the receptionist read through it while on the phone, but they didn't know anything about blood tests to check.

KatyMac · 16/06/2021 20:14

Do you think the insurance company will cover the cost of tests?
