How to get our new boy to toilet outside

He's a rescue from Abu Dhabi so I know he's lived in a flat for quite a while but we've had him a month now and for the last week he's been allowed out. He's very confident and happy in the garden, the back door is open almost all day and his litter tray sits right by the back door. However he'll still come back inside to wee and poo in his litter tray, any tips for encouraging him to do it outside?
The smell is foul and I can't stand it much longer!

You've only had him 5 minutes; maybe he won't want to do the toilet outside. Mine took months before they decided outside was better. I still have a tray though

Our last cat changed to outside almost as soon as he was allowed so I'd just assumed they preferred it! Fingers crossed he changes his mind soon then!

Pour part of his used litter in the garden in an area of soil you have dug over to a fine tilth. Then rake it over so its a nice fresh patch like the gravel gardens in Japan lol.

He will get the idea.
