My young smallish cat got chased by a fox on her first day outdoors

We have a just over 1 year old female cat, Cleo. We kept her indoors as a kitten but thought it was time to allow her out. We are first time cat owners and a bit nervous so we got her a gps tracker and for the last 2 weeks we let her out in the garden for 1 hour each day supervised. On Monday we decided it was time to give her more freedom so I let her out on her own in the morning and she spent several hours exploring the garden and going in and out of the house. But then at some point in the afternoon I heard a scramble and saw a big fox chasing her through the garden. I screamed and the fox ran away but obviously now I am terrified of letting her out on her own again. I am gutted because before that happened she was having the time of her life. I keep reading that foxes are not a risk to cats but then why was the fox chasing her? Would love to hear experiences of people who have outdoor cats in a fox populated area. Thank you.

Awwww bless her.

We have loads of foxes around our way and loads of cats, most of the time they just ignore each other. But if there happens to be food around they can get a bit territorial (the cat as well as the fox).
My old cat won't stand for any nonsense with foxes and I have seen her hiss and chase them away before now.
I've never ever known a fox to properly attack a cat before, the most I've seen is a bit of a chase from both sides.

I think your cat was just unlucky this time, I'm sure she'll be fine once she gets more confident.

Thank you. I called her in right away after it happened and I thought she would be scared but not at all. She wasn't phased at all and was grumpy to be locked in again. I am a bit worried that she has no sense of danger...

We have a fox who visits our garden most nights now and I have 3 cats.
One of my cats who is normally very placid was seen chasing the fox out of our garden and both jumped over the fence into a neighbouring garden.
I hear conflicting stories about cats and foxes together though

My now sadly departed cat R used to chase foxes, he wasn't big himself but I'd seen on at least 3 occasions him chasing a fox down my drive.

We've now got a 10 month kitten and have had her for 7 weeks tomorrow, I'm still reluctant to let her out for long as she seems so scared and nervous of being outside. So far only let her out when I'm in garden and she doesn't venture far. Which is probably daft as she is an ex farm cat so can probably look after herself but because of what happened to R (got hit by a car and killed) I'm worried about letting her roam

Agree that cars are a much bigger danger to cats Sad

Thank you for the replies. I think we will supervise her in the garden for a bit longer.
