How much do I sell kittens for?

I recently rescued a black and white female and it turns out she is pregnant. I'm not sure with how many kittens yet. I have no clue of her breed or the breed of the father of the kittens.

As much as I would love to keep them, I can't and will need to sell them. I want to make sure they are going to good homes.

What is the usual selling point for kittens of this type?

You don’t. You let a rescue find them decent homes and get her spayed ASAP.

I will be getting her spayed as soon as I can. Aren't there already so many kittens and cats in rescues? I don't want the be a part of the problem.

They won’t be a breed as such, they’re surely just moggies. can you seek advice from the rescue she came from, they ought to be more than ready to help if they réhomed her to you and she’s pregnant!

mooongooose · 22/05/2021 14:20

Op literally said she wants to find them good homes. Why would a rescue want them, this isn't an animal welfare issue and there's nothing wrong with responsibly selling animals

PegPeople · 22/05/2021 14:20

I assume you rescued her privately as otherwise the rescue centre would have already spayed her?

I wouldn't be selling them I'd be getting in touch with rescue centres and asking if they could rehomed them once weaned. They will do proper home checks and make sure they go to responsible owners.

reallyreallyborednow · 22/05/2021 14:20

Contact the rescue. They will have a list of vetted homes waiting for kittens.

They should also contribute to her care. What sort of rescue doesn’t spay before rehoming?!

Unless you want to sell for money?

PanicBuyerOfGin · 22/05/2021 14:23

I have always got kittens privately not through cat rescue places. I wouldn't pay though and would be horrified if anyone tried to charge me.

Wolfiefan · 22/05/2021 14:24

Rescues will do home checks. You won’t be adding to the burden because you’d be making sure they go to homes that know what they’re taking on and are prepared to be homes for life.
A rescue I volunteer for actually took in a pregnant cat. Let her have her kittens. Rehomed the kittens. Spay the mum and returned her to the owners.
You could always offer to make a donation to the charity if you felt able to.

newcatmoth · 22/05/2021 14:25

I rescued her privately, not from a rescue centre.

I have been advised not to give them away for free or for a very low price as that can attract poor owners? With the assumption being if people are willing to pay a decent price for then they are more likely to be serious about being good cat owners.

I'm not sure I've explained that very well!

I have no idea what I'm doing and want the best for my lovely cat and her kittens.

tsmainsqueeze · 22/05/2021 14:26

Exactly what Wolfiefan says.
A rescue will also sort the spay for you too.
Her breed will be a domestic shorthair AKA moggie , father probably is too, the fact that he has been prowling around unneutered is not good , google FIV in cats .

Blueemeraldagain · 22/05/2021 14:27

The chances of these kittens being bought by people with bad intentions (for dog fights etc) or people with good but misguided intentions (neglectful) would be too high for me. It’s not your fault the cat got pregnant so you are not adding to the problem. Let the professionals take over and find the best homes.

That said I remember my mum rehoming an accidental litter when I was a teen and she advertised them at a ridiculous price for moggies (£150/200? I can’t quite remember), met the prospective buyers and then lowered/waived the fee if she thought they were suitable. I see what she was doing, especially as it was her fault the cat got pregnant, but still not the approach I would take. Still too risky.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 22/05/2021 14:29

Free kittens would potentially be used as dog bait Sad

Itwasoverwhen · 22/05/2021 14:30

I can't believe people still believe the dog fight stuff. Do you really think that criminals running dog fights are going around picking up kittens off gumtree?

Surely they would just get some cats and keep breeding their own kittens?

This is what I was thinking

I think wolfies advise is best. Get in touch with rescues and I'm sure they will be able to help.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 22/05/2021 14:32

It’s not OPs fault the cat got pregnant before she rehomed it! And now she’s trying to do the right thing for the cats and kittens. I still think a rescue would be best placed to help though. It’s not really a burden as presumably you’d hang on to the kittens while they wait for a home, like a foster?

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 22/05/2021 14:36

You don't sell them. You contact a rescue organisation who will find good homes for them. There is a huge demand for kittens right now and rescue organisations will have no problem placing them.

Dollywilde · 22/05/2021 14:37

We got our cats in a similar scenario, the mum was a stray who had given birth in a family’s garden and decided to stay put. They kept mum and one kitten but needed to get rid of the rest.

In our scenario the kittens were advertised at £50 each, when we arrived and they’d checked us out they told us they were actually asking each adoptee to donate £50 to charity. We donated £50 via our phones to the Cat’s Protection League there and then before we took the kittens home, which felt fair. Black and white standard moggies.

DarcyLewis · 22/05/2021 14:37

Think my kitten cost £40, but she wasn't vaccinated or anything.

Stickytreacle · 22/05/2021 14:40

Ive taken in pregnant strays before op. I would strongly recommend rehoming through a decent rescue who do proper home checks. I kept the kittens until they were 10 weeks and then they went to the centre and were snapped up. Rehoming privately is a nightmare, you get unsuitable people wanting them and it can be difficult checking homes etc. The Blue Cross do a scheme where you can rehome directly from your home I think.

stuckinarutatwork · 22/05/2021 14:46

I think it's illegal to sell kittens and puppies unless you are a registered breeder now (look up Lucy's Law).
As you've previously mentioned, giving them away isn't a good idea unless you personally know the new owner.
Contact your local rescue and have them find suitable homes for the kittens. They will also help you neuter the cat.

Dollywilde · 22/05/2021 14:46

For what it’s worth though this was via DH’s large workplace notice board, so it wasn’t on gumtree etc where any old random person could turn up. DH didn’t know the colleague selling the kittens (8000 or so people worked there) but it did some due diligence I guess.

reallyreallyborednow · 22/05/2021 14:49

I rescued her privately

How do you “rescue” privately? Do you mean you got the cat off someone? How? Gumtree? Friend? Did you pay? Are they one of those mad cat people who match up strays with new owners? Can you go back to this person to recover vet costs etc?

Has she being going out? Have you seen a vet to estimate how far she is and how many kittens?

Shitfuckcommaetc · 22/05/2021 14:55

I recently bought a kitten for £150, but near me prices vary from 100-400 for moggies. Insane!

Hellocatshome · 22/05/2021 14:58

Let a rescue find them proper homes, they dont need to go into the rescue they can stay with you and be rehomed straight from your house to their new house but at least you know they are going to someone who actually cares about animal welfare and not some random willing to pay the £££s
