Top 10 in order
Luna, Milo, Simba, Nala, Loki, Charlie, Bella, Leo, Willow, Coco.
Source: GoCompare (based on 17,400 insurance quotes) - via the BBC website this morning.

Light-hearted thread & apologies in advance to any cat with one of the names above.

What happened to proper cat names like Felix, Sid, Oscar, Colin, Bob, Sheba, Lucy, and Fluffy?
Anyone (apart from me) think most of the names in the survey are rubbish? Or am I just showing my age? Grin

Gosh. That's spot on. I think all the cats that have been given to us for homing in the past year (because people have had second thoughts about cat ownership usually) have had one of those names. I now have quite an irrational hatred of all of those names - particularly Loki, Simba and Nala.

thecatneuterer · 12/04/2021 15:47

And I agree. Colin is a great cat name. All those in the list are shit (apologies to anyone I'm offending)

I'm fond of 'old' names - Edith, Ethel, Cyril and the like.

QueenPaw · 12/04/2021 15:59

I have Ollie and "not my cat" also known as Munch/Paws Grin

RUOKHon · 12/04/2021 16:04

Both our lockdown cats are named after really random food items.

I don’t get ‘sensible’ names for pets. Surely part of the fun of having them is that you get to give them ludicrous names like ‘Onion’ or ‘Princess Floofikins of Chonkland III’ (both names we considered for ours).

thecatneuterer · 12/04/2021 16:16

One of mine is called Goat. That's cos he has an enormous sticky out belly, a bob tail (accident we presume), is as thick as mince, eats anything and likes to perch on any sort of precarious, high up thing he can.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/04/2021 16:18

We have a willow cat in the family! But i knew willows over 30 years ago so it’s just come back around.

I hate Loki, every other Bengal was called Loki at one point. I do like human names though. We had a ginger and a treacle. Lucy is a great name though.

samlh · 12/04/2021 16:54

I have a lockdown Leo, but only because he's a white and ginger little lion and his mane is glorious :D

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/04/2021 17:31

I can confirm that I've never had a cat with any of those names & that while I have never revealed TC's real name, It isn't on that list.
I should perhaps confess that my sister did have a cat called Simba but this was about 20 years ago so I'll forgive her Grin.
Basil, Sybil, Karl, and Lenny. Proper cat names (even though I did have doubts about Karl and Lenny's monikers when we got them)

Cheddar thinks she has the best name ever!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 12/04/2021 18:39

I don't like them but I called one of mine Mr Rigby so what do I know

CongealedCrags · 12/04/2021 18:40

That's a very unimaginative list.
I hope those poor kittens are now known as (and only answer to) nicknames that are far more cool.

Watto1 · 12/04/2021 18:43

I clicked on this thread expecting lockdown names like Furlough and Zoom!

That's what I'm calling the next pair of cats we take in :)
LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/04/2021 19:04

Cats should have proper names, including a surname. Derek Blenkinsop, for example. Or Audrey Thomas. It dignifies them somewhat ( and confuses the vet)

LegArmpits · 12/04/2021 19:07

We've got Lord Ramsay Bolton and Janet.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/04/2021 19:09

I used to have a cat called Colin (rescued).
We French-ified it, as Colin (Fr) means hake.

He liked being French. I felt very sophisticated having a French cat. I was about 12.

Giving the male a really posh name and the female a more pedestrian name? Is that you, Rees-Mogg?
Vinorosso74 · 12/04/2021 19:25

Our departed old girl was called Coco and it suited her. She was 6 when we adopted and it seemed wrong to change it. She was born around 2002 before it was so popular Wink
I do like proper human names for cats. A lot of the FIV+ boys with the big heads seem to get the bloke names. I've met a few Daves, Bruces etc. The most unusual was Eugene (he isn't FIV+ nor a big head).
A lot of female cats seem to have flower names. You never hear of a cat called Claire or Sarah.
Names like Tom, Timmy, Milly, Molly still seem popular.
Years ago, a friend cat sat near us for cats called Leather and Rubber. They were named after the fetishes of their humans.

Tittie · 12/04/2021 19:35

I heard someone calling for their cat Tuppence recently. I now desperately need a pet called Tuppence.

always2ndbest · 12/04/2021 19:41

This is Lord Oscar Floofington, nickname Floof, Floofster or Mr Fluffy Pants!

We adopted two sphynx cats and renamed them Clarence and Alabama from our favourite movie true romance.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/04/2021 20:33

I wanted to call my two Zomorph and Oromorph, or fentanyl. Always thought that was a pretty name. KataMine would also be good. My colleagues think I'm mean!

GreenCat44 · 12/04/2021 20:35

My niece had a Simba that died earlier this year aged 17, she was about 4 when she got through and obsessed with lion king so...
None of my cat names are on that list but they have odd non human names.
Also, my mum has a Fluffy and Princess Sosej 😂😂

Do you have children called Charlie and Caine?

Years ago, when I got my first rescue cat, the lady from Cats' Protection referred to his bum as his 'tuppenny piece' Grin.
