The cats have taken one look at the weather and retreated to bed - is this normal?

My kittens love going outside. They play out all day long. They have absolutely adored the good weather. One kitten took it upon herself to rid the garden of every flying thing that dared to enter her airspace - butterflies, bees, gnats, midges, flies. (I don't condone her behaviour but telling her to leave the butterflies and bees alone did nothing!! Disobedient kitty...)

Today they have put their noses out. Ventured out for a second and then turned around and gone back to bed. One didn't even go on the kids bed (usual daytime sleeping place)...she went into her actual cat bed. All because it is windy, cold and trying to spit. Is this usual cat behaviour?

Yes

Yes, conpletely normal.
I'm surprised they haven't gone to the front of the house and checked the weather there (repeatedlly) first though, followed by giving you dirty looks for failing to adequately provide decent meteological

Oops - pressed post too soon.

...for failing to adequately provide decent meterological services to them. Grin

Grin My husband keeps badgering me to buy the cat flap as we are always opening and closing the door.....I won't tell him that once the back is covered they will start with the front.

Yes. Silky cat has imitated a dead cat for the whole winter.

First day of nice weather and apparently she doesn't need to sleep 23 hours a day after all and actually asks to go outside instead of being thrown out.

It's like we have a new cat.

TheVolturi · 01/04/2021 12:32

Come summer time we don't even have a cat. She buggers off and comes back when it gets colder.

dementedpixie · 01/04/2021 12:38

Mine want the back door open (there is a cat flap in the front door!) But they look out and decide they don't want to fo out after all. If they do go out the back they end up coming back in the front and the the circle repeats. Or they go out the catflap and then want let in the back door (sliding glass patio doors so you see them sitting there).

TheLongRider · 01/04/2021 12:40

Perfectly normal behaviour, four out five cats are curled up in DD's room.

TokyoSushi · 01/04/2021 12:40

Oh yes. Doesn't stop him meowing repeatedly at the back door, just for me to open it so he can check that he still doesn't want to go out!

SedentaryCat · 01/04/2021 13:04

Definitely normal cat behaviour.

One of ours 'observes' the outside from the back of the sofa. Often for hours at a time, then gets a dead leg which she has to hobble on until it comes good again. She expects sympathy every single time this happens. And Dreamies.

Mumdiva99 · 01/04/2021 17:44

Fortunately the weather has improved in time for playing out before tea.

And I thought cats did nothing before I got them.

Normal, in bad weather mine gets up for breakfast, pops out for a wee then back to the airing cupboard for another ten hours..
