We have the opportunity to re-home the above breed, he is already 12 years old. We have 3 young adult kids at home & no other pets, having previously had a fantastic Staffordshire for 10 years who sadly got put to sleep last month.
Any experience of this breed very welcome as we need to make a decision fast!

Persians are amazing!! Laid back, docile and very affectionate. Lovely lovely cats. A friend of mine had a Birman and said he was wonderful and thought he was a dog! Persians are not that bright, I don't know how well endowed with brains Birmans are. I bet a Persian/Birman cross would be a lovely combination. Go for it OP!

Sparkles29 · 21/02/2021 19:22

Thanks for that! We've decided to go ahead if the health checks come back clear Smile

Woohoo. Im sure you won't regret it. And you will escape some of the problems you can get with pure breed Persians.
If he's got a long coat, you need a metal comb and a tangle teaser. And make sure you Keep his bloomers short.
Be careful with the diet. You don't want a long haired cat with the squits. Vets will do hygiene trims. my Persians go to the groomer about every 3 months or so. It's more expensive than my own hair cuts though.,

Where are you getting him from? Great that you are adopting an older cat.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/02/2021 13:38

I he is a stunner!

JorisBonson · 22/02/2021 13:40

Wow!! He's beautiful!

My old NDN's had a Persian / birman who would invite himself over to stay at ours a lot. He was the chattiest, sweetest, soppiest thing I've ever met.

Well done on taking on an older cat too! Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 22/02/2021 13:54

He's got Persian eyes. And beautiful colouring. What's his name

Sparkles29 · 22/02/2021 21:33

Keeping all our paws crossed here. He looks lovely. Keep us posted.

My two cats had a Birman mum who had a fling with the local ginger Tom. The rescue centre where I got them from said they thought a breeder had kicked out the mother due to her undesirable mating. I'm not convinced by that. More likely she got lost then had her fling with the local Tom cat. Why someone didn't have the mum chipped is beyond me - I met her at the rescue centre and she was a stunning cat.

My cats are a little bit nervous but incredibly affectionate and beautiful to look at. One of them needs to be brushed fairly regularly as he can get a bit knotted but strangely the other one has denser fur which doesn't need brushing at all.

I do hope you manage to adopt Humphrey. He looks adorable and I am sure you won't regret getting him.

He looks nice. No offence to any Persian owners but they're not very attractive to look at at all but the Birman in him is diluting that and he's a stunner.

I'd go for it if his health checks pan out. Personality wise, he will be affectionate I should think

SparePantsAndLego · 23/02/2021 00:10

He’s absolutely gorgeous.

Sparkles29 · 23/02/2021 06:58

Thanks-really interesting to hear all your experiences!
Apparently he doesn't spend a huge amount of time outdoors-is that the norm for this breed?
(I'm also hoping to not have to get a littter tray-we are going to install a cat flap instead which he is familiar with. Or is a litter tray a must have?).Hmm

For a new cat yes.

Yes it is the norm for them to be mainly indoors. You will need a litter tray.

Sparkles29 · 23/02/2021 14:25

Really? We have a garden-I was hoping he'd use the cat flap we are going to install rather than a litter tray Confused

Sparkles29 · 23/02/2021 14:27

(To get outside....not to go to the toilet on!!) Wink

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2021 14:32

He is probably not streetwise enough to go
Out unsupervised. Particularly if he's got the brains of a Persian. And i'd not be letting him out other than in an enclosed garden.
