Leo starting to go off chicken based food

Hi All,

I am just wondering if anyone elses kitties have gone through phases where they won't eat a certain food that they usually love.

We get Blink! food for Leo, and we've already had to cancel the chicken and chicken/turkey pouches as he is now favouring the fishy ones.

Is this normal? I don't want to feed him just the fishy ones, and he still eats the chicken/duck & chicken/beef pouches.

I think he's just being a fussy bugger.. has anyone else found that their cats just go off certain types of food?

Pictures attached because of the rules and because he's grown up too quickly and he's not my fluffy kitten any more (he's one next week).

Both mine prefer fishy ones too

samlh · 24/11/2020 16:27

@dementedpixie i'm glad it's not just HRH then. I was concerned because he used to love the chicken/turkey but he really would rather go hungry than eat them at the moment.

Oh my god I adore him Grin

Mine have changed brands and flavours of wet food several times. Just glad they don't care what dried food they get.

MyAnacondaMight · 24/11/2020 16:41

My cat generally doesn’t like plain poultry flavours either. With the exception of Thrive tins, which are an exception and readily devoured.

Suggest introducing some other good quality brands of cat food, to vary his diet some more and stave off boredom. Thrive is a good brand (eye wateringly expensive) and easily found in the UK, likewise Edgard and Cooper and Natures Menu Country Hunter. Otherwise you may need to look to Europe for good quality food - Zooplus sell a great range (of both excellent cat food and junk).

Chicken is a (comparatively) common allergen for cats, so it’s possible that a low level intolerance could be contributing to the fussiness. But Blink pouches are all mostly chicken, with just a bit of duck or beef etc., so you’d think kitty would reject them all if that was the case.

@dementedpixie - He will not touch dry food (god knows we have tried so many different ones) but I might branch out and get some different wet foods and see if I can lure him in with them.

@MyAnacondaMight We give him thrive tins as well as the vet said to up his oily fish to help with his coat.

We tried the chicken breast and liver ones and it was a no go, but he loves the mackerel and sardine ones.

I think he's got the taste for the sea and he's been spoiled by it.

@MummytoCSJH thanks! He's a sweetie, but he's the boss and he knows it!

Cheddar went off any bird flavour weebox meat sticks. Despite loving all of them before. She will still eat the fish ones thank goodness. As most other treats make her sick.
I love that picture of Leo sitting in front of the computer.

Try salmon oil on his food. That's what my two have for their coats.

samlh · 24/11/2020 17:07

@Toddlerteaplease It was a Monday, he doesn't like Mondays

I've tried salmon oil.. guess what, he won't eat food with it on!

He's such a fussy kitty!!

Well they do get away with being fussy when they are Uber cute. Persians are just the best though aren't they.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/11/2020 17:43

It’s in them to do this to avoid nutritional deficiencies.

He’s a beautiful boy.

TroysMammy · 24/11/2020 19:48

Haribo slowly went off chicken and fish pouches. He'll happily eat Hills dried chicken and has a liking for Whiskas salmon in jelly tins which luckily I can get individually from the local shop. He has a bit for breakfast so the tin lasts 4-5 days and he eats it straight from the fridge.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2020 20:30

My two loved royal Canin Persian and it was great for their coats. But it makes Cheddar sick!

samlh · 24/11/2020 21:26

I think I'm just going to resign myself to the fact that he's preferring fish to chicken Smile

My local cat rescue love me for the amount of dry food and pouches I donate from hrh!

Here he is after a particularly stinky tea of tuna and salmon relaxing after a hard day on his new radiator bed!

They come back into fashion eventually, I used to keep them.

Paranoidmarvin · 24/11/2020 22:15

Ohhhh this is my current problem. They changed the recipe for Lily’s kitchen. Now my cat won’t eat it. Spent so much money on others. He has now been eating Harrington’s. But I have no idea of this will be a long term thing or just a one off.

He will sniff certain flavours and look at me as if I am making him eat poison. And walk off ... side eyeing me as he does it.

Hmm
