Hair loss at vaccination or spot-on site?

I've found a bald spot on my cat. Well a new one, she's a habitual overgroomer, but this is on the back of her neck where she can't reach.

She had her vaccinations last week, had anyone known this to cause hair loss? She has had Frontline spot on this week too but never reacts to that normally.

Vet wasn't concerned if the skin didn't look unhealthy but didn't seem to think vacs would normally cause this so was just curious if it was something anyone else had ever experienced?

Hi Lellochip.
Something similar happened to one of my cats years ago.A few days after her jabs she developed a lump and a bald spot, but it resolved in a couple of weeks and her fur grew back.Don't know if that helps.

Thanks Clarich007 - you've just reminded me that I think she did have a lump last time. Probably a similar reaction?

And thanks Barbara, your post was also very helpful Confused

Similar happened with a friend with a dog - miniature poodle.

She'd specifically said that the dog needed to have his jabs on the inside at the top of his leg, as he was a show dog & she'd heard of this kind of thing - this was what her usual vet did happily.. But no the locum vet knew better and did the jab in the neck, which promptly went bald then when the hair grew back it was grey (black dog).

Very promising show dog, qualified for Crufts, had to be retired from the show ring!

We adopted a 12 year old cat three months ago. We used Frontline spot-on a few weeks later and his fur fell out in the same spot. Very disappointed that Frontline can do this. If you read the spec it is a side effect with some cats. Luckily the fur has grown back a month or so later. We won’t be using it again.

You're welcome lellochip Hope it's better soon

Time before last one of my cats had this after the vaccination. It regrew with no problems and he didn't have a reaction this year to the vaccs.

One of ours reacted to Bravecto. His mother didn't... it did regrow though.

Years ago though, our old cat got a supermarket (cheap) collar which was unbeknownst to us impregnated with something against fleas. It stank horribly and we took it off almost immediately but it was too late. She lost all the fur underneath the collar inside a fortnight and it never grew back - and she lived another 10 years...

Yes, it happened with one of our cats after the vaccinations. He couldn’t leave it alone, until the area was red and bald. The vet put a cone on for a week. When we took it off, he had it red raw within 10 minutes. Cone for 10 days! Took it off, same thing happened! Cone on for 2 weeks! This was enough time, and he didn’t bother it.

The vet said in future, he needs divided doses. Every year since then, he has had 2 injections two weeks apart. No more problems!
