What happens to unclaimed injured cats after they’ve been seen by vet?

Sorry for long title!

Earlier today I found a cat in the middle of a very busy 50mph road having been hit by a car. I pulled over and was beyond thrilled to notice it was still breathing. We immediately took it to the nearest vet where they are hopefully going to operate.

If the cat is not microchipped and / or does not get claimed, what will happen to it? I’d love to give it a home in that instance, but I doubt it’ll be that straightforward 😢

Don't they go to Cats Protection?

Did you say you were interested in rehoming the cat?

LittleCabbage · 03/11/2020 22:02

Gah, just wrote long post which wouldn’t then post properly. In a nutshell, register your interest in rehoming the cat. The vet surgery staff may be thrilled not to have to find it a home elsewhere if unclaimed and unchipped.

Oh brilliant, thank you.

It was all a bit of a blur; I wasn’t allowed into the vets owing to coronavirus, and I was so worried about the poor little thing.

I was going to give them a call in the morning to see how it is doing, so I can let them know then.

Thanks again (and apologies for having created duplicate posts; I have no idea how this happened).

It really depends on the area. If there is an RSPCA veterinary hospital or clinic nearby, they may take it on to continue its treatment and rehabilitation, ready for rehoming. They have a certain time limit that they always keep the cat before before rehoming, to give people time to check where their missing cat may be.

If not, your vet surgery staff may try to find it a home, or one of the staff may rehome it. Definitely register your interest in having that cat if it remains unclaimed and isn’t chipped. If none of their staff can take it on, they’ll probably be thrilled!

@ServeTheServants how did it go at the vets?

SamsMumsCateracts · 09/11/2020 06:19

Our cat was unclaimed and injured. He went to the blue cross, then came to us.

Any update OP?

I’d also like to know if you now have a cat @ServeTheServants

@ServeTheServants is the cat yours now? 🐱
