One of our cats miaows A LOT

Ok, so we have one black cat, f, who, (bless her cottons) has hardly any voice - when she does miaow you struggle to hear it. The other, a big, m, half-Bengal, half-something else, bugger of a cat, miaows all the time. We used to think it was because he wanted feeding, buut it's not juust that, it's also when he wants to be let out, or when we're walking in or our of the house, or just to get us to watch him eat - weirdo. Aside from that though, can you think of any reason why he might be miaowing so much? He's not in pain.

He's just trying to talk to you, using his voice the same way some people do when they're abroad and don't know the local language so they shout louder in their own tongue!

We have a very chatty cat who tells us everything. He comments on the weather, the neighbours, the leaves blowing outside, the state of his food bowl, in short he doesn't shut up unless he's asleep.

You just learn to live with it. I try and answer back and try and work out what it is he's telling me.

wheresmymojo · 06/10/2020 23:42

Agree with above.

Cats miaow to communicate with humans (they make other noises to other cats but do not miaow).

Some cats are quiet and some are pretty chatty.

One of mine miaows when she wants to be petted.

One of them just likes to tell you about his day if he's been outside.

wheresmymojo · 06/10/2020 23:43

Oh and one of ours complains very loudly to us if it's raining outside. I think he may think we can control it like turning off the shower and is pretty upset at the whole thing.

🤣🤣🤣
Welcome to bengals!! They love to voice!!
I have two - a silver marble, who is our skinny racehorse - very quiet and a bit nervous
And a brown spotted - my little Chubb who lets you know she is in the room, on the stairs, wants to come in your room (so open the door!!)
She doesn't even like to be held or sit on your lap - but she wants attention! My daughter spends ages playing with her and her toys - sometimes we all shout to her to shut up!! And then her meows are quiet and hurt!! 😂
Never a dull moment 🤷‍♀️

JacobReesMogadishu · 06/10/2020 23:49

My Birman does this. It’s like he’s telling me about everything he wants me to know about. Pita during zoom meetings. 😆

Smallsteps88 · 07/10/2020 00:02

I have one that never shuts his mouth too! He’s very stupid. He will call us from the hallway every night minutes after we’ve gone to bed (switched the lights off downstairs) to ask us where we are. He knows where we are. We are in the same rooms we sleep in every night, the same rooms he inspects every night before deciding which one to sleep in, the rooms don’t move, they are in the same place and yet, every single night he forgets where they are until I respond to his calls by saying his name. Then he races up the stairs and completes his inspection.

The first time he stayed out after dark we were really worried we wouldnt know when he came back to let him in. We neednt have worried. The whole street knew he was back. At 3am. Hmm His miaow is the loudest cat miaow I have ever heard. You would swear he had a megaphone. And there’s really no need. It’s a very small house. And he’s a tiny boy too. I don’t know how he produces such a sound.

My girl cat does a tiny little squeak of miaow. Barely perceptible.

Smallsteps88 · 07/10/2020 00:04

My boy isn’t even quiet when he sleeps. He grunts and gurgles and sighs and cheeps. And his purr! So loud!

QueenOllie · 07/10/2020 00:18

Mine never shuts up. He purrs at me constantly and that's only intercepted with yowls/miaow/shouting MAMA at me. He likes to whinge about the weather a lot

FanSpamTastic · 07/10/2020 00:21

I can't shut the office door because - if I do - she sits outside and cries loudly until I let her in.

Smallsteps88 · 07/10/2020 00:25

My boy taps the living room door if it’s shut. Always 3 taps with his claws. Tap tap tap. The. He sits and waits. Girl cat pokes her paws underneath it to get our attention. The. Walks away when we open the door. Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2020 01:37

I think Cheddar is a Siamese in Persian suit. She has a LOT to say. You can have proper conversations with her. And she has an opinion on everything. She's surprisingly well informed!

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2020 01:39

Snorg used to be mute but has really found her voice in the last couple of years! The late fatty was loud, but she just used to demand!

KoalaRabbit · 07/10/2020 02:19

With ours its normally staffing issues - like 2am she needs water, 2.15am she needs a stroke, 4am she needs food, 7am she's cross no staff have arrived for duty and she needs her second breakfast, a cuddle and someone to give attention - she will let preferred servant know they are the lucky chosen one.

Or if DH leaves house she howls as she's angry he's left her, then she always howls the exact minute he's due back if he's late - no idea how she tells time but she does it to the minute.

Basically you need to improve your cat service levels. Grin

sneakysnoopysniper · 07/10/2020 02:56

Excessive vocalizing in cats can also be sign that something is wrong. They cannot talk to let us know they are feeling pain or discomfort. It may be a good idea to have your vet check her out if she seems to meow for no apparent reason.

ElizabethMainwaring · 07/10/2020 03:19

Some marvellous posts on this thread.
Stanley was always an extremely vocal ginger Tom.
But when he got very elderly and his hearing went he was deafening.
He'd wonder in through the catflap yelling his head off. Bless him.

violetbunny · 07/10/2020 08:09

One of mine meows at me constantly for attention - mainly because he wants playtime or pats.

He also meows at me multiple times a day to walk him to his food bowl. He will actually walk PAST the food bowl, come find me at the back of the house and meow at me, then we walk together back to the food bowl Hmm

OnCandyStripeLegs · 07/10/2020 08:17

I have one like this - his sister just squeaks, but he declares "I have arrived from the cat flap" "I have completed my meal" "my bowl is EMPTY" "it's raining" "I said it's raining" "when I said it was raining I meant make it stop" "where is my sister" "what are you doing" "I have climbed the stairs now" "I am upstairs" "I am downstairs"

MyTwoBengals · 07/10/2020 08:22

Bengals do have a reputation for being noisy. My two certainly live up to it 😸😸
It’s part of their charm

Oldraver · 07/10/2020 09:04

We never heard Ern's meow for ages, he was a quiet cat , apart from 4am to be let out

Colin is a noisy bugger. If he finds himself in a room alone he will squawk till he finds you. We'd only had him home an hour when we heard his purr... so blummin loud

Iwantacookie · 07/10/2020 09:15

One of mine never shuts up! Its like having a toddler asking why all day.
As soon as she wakes up shell start meowing until you give her enough fuss.
The other the only time shell make noise is when her biscuits have gone below a certain level in her bowl.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/10/2020 09:39

Ours was a Bengal who never had an un-vocalised thought but he was noticeably noisier in the run up to needing dentals.

You just have to talk back all the time.

sweetkitty · 07/10/2020 09:46

My ginger boy never shuts up he’s definitely the most vocal, tortie girl very rarely talks to you, black boy will just announce his presence in the room once. Ginger boy will will have full blown conversations.

Black boy is currently walking back and forth with a toy noise in his mouth whilst ginger boy plays with a Xmas tree bauble (we don’t have a tree up he just loves them)

sweetkitty · 07/10/2020 09:46

Mouse

maggiethecat · 07/10/2020 09:51

Chatty cat here too! was thinking the other day that I've gone back to having a demanding toddler.
She wakes us up at 6.30 miaowing loudly on the landing outside our bedrooms until breakfast is served.

NW2SW · 07/10/2020 09:52

Another yeller here. I can hear him approaching from two houses away, announcing his grand entrance Grin
