How to wean adult cat from cheap wetfood to good quality wetfood?

Off the back of another thread, I bought some trial packs of high meat content, grain free wetfood from Zooplus in the hope of weaning my cat off Whiskas. But he's not keen. 😕

Please could you, experienced cat owners, advise how to get him to eat this instead of Whiskas? I've tried mixing it with a bit of Whiskas but he won't play ball. These are all poultry, gravy based food which he usually likes from Whiskas and Lidl's own brand.

I bought about 6 different brands, do I try each one one at a time to see if he'll find one he likes. Or do i just keep offering the one he at least tried a bit of, hoping that he'd eat more?

Or do I throw in the towel and revert to Whiskas wet food and buy good quality dry food (currently on Purina)? Such a shame as the Zooplus ones smell and look so much better than Whiskas.

Oh and he's 1 year old.

Thanks in advance!

I’d probably try to get his dry food as high a quality as you can afford, especially if he’s a boy. (I recall reading somewhere that male cats are more prone to urinary tract issues and dry food plays a role in this but I couldn’t point you to a source.)

Chat to your vet nurse. My practice had a vet nurse who ran nutrition consults free of charge. They were linked to a certain brand product but it was good to get advice as that brand’s product range is vast with a lot of options. We were stuck on our own: do we choose age related over indoor or neutered or breed specific 🤯

Our cat has done well on her recommendations (now 18) and our dog, who was overweight, is normal sized.

Apparently you’re supposed to begin the transition by giving them a small amount of the new food with slightly less of their regular.

Thank you, @Beetle76 and @Toilenstripes. I'll try introducing the new food in his old food and see how it goes.

We gave up with ours and just feed good quality dry food. We have three and they all like, and eat, Felix, so we're just sticking with that rather than risking buying stuff they'll hate.

I buy better quality dry food (currently purizon and Feringa from zoo plus)
And then felix as good as it looks wet food. Have tried better quality wet food but he is not as keen although occasionally if I add a few treats on top he will eat it. Any leftovers go to stray cat so it's not wasted.
