Shorthair cat fur is matting

I’ve noticed in the last few days my 8year old tabby is starting to get mats in his fur, around his hip area. At firsts I just thought he had something stuck in it, but they are ‘spreading’. ITs not the how to deal with it I’m worried about as I’ve have started brushing them out, But more the why is this happening? No changes in his personality, he is eating and drinking like normal. Could it be a sign he is unwell? Should I take him to the vet? I’m a natural worrier but not sure if I’m overthinking this?

Does he have a very thick coat. It maybe that he just needs a really good brush out as it's life than he can manage. My friends cat had to go to the groomers because hers was so thick and she would allow him to brush it.

Has he put weight on? My tubby ginger boy can't always reach some parts of his back so I have to groom him several times a week which he hates and shreds my hands tolerates quite well.

Thanks guys, yes he does have a pretty thick coat. He hasn’t really put any weight on, usually he prefers the dried food but has been eating more of the wet the last week or so. I’ll keep up with the brushing and hope it helps!
