Any hope whatsoever? My sofas are disgusting and need replacing.
Boy cat is a devil for shredding one particular corner. Girl cat likes lie on the floor next to the sofa and pull herself along the length of it using claw power. A bit like spiderman but in horizontal cat form.

We found carpet that matches the sofa and staple gunned the carpet onto the bits the cats scratch. That way the carpet can be removed and replaced once it's destroyed but the underlying fabric is safe.

Well that is just genius. I think you should go on Dragons Den with that, seriously! In the meantime I will steal your idea

I won't have leather (I don't wear it for ethical reasons ) but we have two of the most non-vegetarian, unethical animals known to mankind living with us

At the moment our baggy old Ikea Erktop is standing up to them . Male cat likes to wander over and scratch but a "No" will stop him.

The hall carpet , when Female cat wants into DD bedroom.............whole other story !

I really advise against leather anything. We had a hideous large mirror with a leather surround. It was truly vile. Lord Fur used to get up on his hind legs and rip it with a frenzied glee. When he had eviscerated one side, I turned it around and he shredded the other. It was consigned to the dumpster in a month.

OK maybe need to rethink the leather.
There's no way to keep them out of the lounge unsupervised, we have a large open plan downstairs and the cats come and go as they choose. They have a pretty bloody good cat life, huge garden, loads of places to snooze. Lucky buggers

Good plan Hadn't thought about wicker. Boy cat does try and scratch the outdoor furniture which is a kind of man made plastic woven wicker, he doesn't get very far with it. Maybe I'll just bring it indoors and be done with it

Ugh I really really hate my sofas

My leather one was totally destroyed so I bought a new fabric one three weeks ago. My cat loves to dig her claws in it and paddle away. Cats and nice furniture don't mix.

I haven't rtft but I have 3 scratching machines here and have just had new sofas. We have cat beds and posts and fancy climbing things that they never used to go near until I totally covered them with catnip spray. Do this AWAY from new sofas so no catnip transfer. They completely leave the sofas alone now. I do lock them out of the lounge if no humans in there but I saw you're open plan so not possible. I top up the catnip spray occasionally to keep them concentrated in the areas I'd prefer them to be. I've no issue with them sitting/sleeping on sofas it was the scratching that bothered me.

Water spray? Always worked for us. A firm "NO" and a spray, and they learn not to scratch. I also clip their claws frequently, and have a scratch post.

How do you clip their claws without them ripping you to shreds?

I gave my mum my leather sofas when I bought some new ones.
The cats loved them treated them like a race track. My mum used to cover them at night, then try and deter them in the day unsuccessfuly! But they were natural real leather rather than coated leather and mum used leather food to hide the scratches. They looked better than shredded fabric sofas.
