Had to pull poo out of my cat's bottom

So, as title, last night I noticed poo sticking out of my cat's bum. DH held him while I went to wipe it off but it was solid, like a doweling rod, so I had to pull it out.

Google tells me it's dehydration but he has wet food three times a day (small tins) and there is always water down.

Does he need to see a vet or should I just keep an eye on him and if so what am I looking for?

He's about 11 but we've only had him two years and I don't know his history.

Does he eat a lot of grass? One of my cats gets this sometimes as she seems to eat quite a lot of grass and it gets stuck. Nightmare. I've never taken her to the vets for it though, maybe see if it happens again and ring the vets for advice?!

It could be megacolon which is a much more serious condition. Keep an eye on what he is passing, both stool and urine, as the constipation can prevent them weeing. I had to have my lovely boy pts on Tuesday after the third recurrence in eight months, and a specialist diet wasn’t working anymore.

It might not be but just be alert and if he isn’t passing stools without help by Monday, I would seek vet advice.

Royal Canin Fibre Response food did help our cat for a good few months (then he did epic poos)

This happens to my fluffy girl about once a month - sometimes grass, sometimes twists of hair, sometimes just a stubborn poo.
Advice from vet when one gets stuck is to try pulling gently and if it doesn't come out easily, stop as you can cause damage internally if something is stuck. (Sounds like you're ok if it came out with relative ease).

Then we just wait 24 hours and if she's not managed to get rid of it herself by then, we go to the vet and they deal with it. So far, 9/10 times we've been to the vet, she's pooed in the carrier in the car 🙄😂

I did also get a fountain to help with their water intake :)

I now give her Cat Malt every few days to help everything through, and she's always been on hairball food :)

Yes, I'd go to the vet. I had this with my poor little girl cat and it caused a bowel prolapse (which is disgusting to deal with an horrible for the cat). She became incontinent and was distressed. It wasn't to do with her food or drink but an underlying condition whose name I forget. It was quite horrible.

If it's megacolon, you'll see him really straining, getting very distressed and exhausted. One of my cats had this condition for about 4 years, (until he died at age 20), and was in and out of the vets. It can be operated on, but he was quite old and it wasn't recommended for him. The thing that saved him in the end was liquid paraffin. He became as regular as clockwork. I was amazed. When in doubt, always take your cat to the vet - that's my belief, as they're very sensitive creatures. Hope he's ok.

They hardly ever show that they're suffering, do they? It's hard to notice with cats when they're not well so when you do notice, I definitely think vet. Anything toilet end with boy cats can be really tricky so worth reassuring yourself.

Thanks everyone. He has been weeing fine and did a poo after I posted with no problems, so I think it's maybe hair or grass because he dies eat grass and often brings up furballs.

I'll keep an eye on it in case of anything more serious.

That's good Zurala that your cat is on the mend. Perhaps you put put some lactulose in your cats food going forward - this was recommended to me by a vet for my cat's constipation. Also you can buy some paste that helps with fur balls. Unfortunately my cat ended up with megacolon because her constipation was so bad and had to have part of her colon removed.

I put a fine sprinkling of isphagula (?) husk on my cats' wet food, and extra water. This gives them perfect poos!
