I can always tell when my cat is brewing one. He is yowly, bitey, clawy and generally unpleasant. There are some exceptionally large yowls which herald its arrival, and once it’s out, he is back to being his usual docile, loving and purry self. He gets brushed regularly, which cuts down on the amount of furballs, but we still get the odd one.
