I adopted a cat 2 days ago. Never had a cat before. It was all a bit of a rush so I just went to pets at home and bought any old litter, didn’t realise but I’d bought a ‘smart pack’ which has litter ready in a tray liner you just roll out into the tray x 2.

Anyway, I know I’m meant to scoop it every day, but does that mean for poo and wee? Cat has only done one poo so far which I’ve scooped but how do I know when he has pee’d and if you have non-clumping litter how do you know where it is etc?

I haven’t pee scooped yet and when I scooped the poo just now, underneath the top layer looks pretty wet so I’m assuming there is lots of wee in there.

Should I need to fully change the litter every 2 days or should I be trying to identify and scoop out wee as and when and topping up litter?

The cat is in 24/7 just now obviously as we have only just got him so I guess I’ll need to keep on top of the tray more than if he was getting out and about.

But going forward should I get a clumping litter to make it easier to scoop out wee?

Does anyone have any recommendations on which litter I should use? I’ve got catsan at the moment and he is using it no problems.

I thought this would all be self explanatory but I’m a bit confused! I’m so paranoid it’s going to smell if I don’t do it right Confused

TIA!

Fantastic, thanks magpie (Pity I hoarded that massive stash of cats best...)

We use Natusan which I think is great. The wee balls come out like this. Don't ask me why I have a photo. I just do, ok?

I love world’s best cat litter. Clumps brilliantly and is so easy to take out.

Only possible downside is that because it clumps so well I get very, very lazy with giving the tray a good scrubbing as regular as I should do. I tell my self all the wee and poo is removed so no need. Yesterday I realised it had been six weeks since I removed all the litter and disinfected the tray, I suspect the house was a bit pongy and that I’ve gone nose blind!

Wood litter here, much better for environment than clumping, no smell and easy. I have 2 trays per cat. Get an extra large litter scoop with holes in in. At least Daily scoop out poo, wee turns pellets to sawdust so scoop that and kind of sift it so sawdust with pee goes into compostable bag and whole pellets can be put back into tray. Once every week enjoy whole thing and replace. No smell! I hate h the smell of catsan!

world’s best user here. more expensive but it lasts ages. i also flush with no issues. my cat yells at me every time he goes so it’s little and often, scoop-wise!

kitkat463 world's best is a clumping litter, and is made from corn kernels. I agree, I avoid "mineral" type litters.

I wasn't sure about composting litter (minus poos, obviously); do you do it at home? Does it work well? I compost the rabbit waste but obviously they are vegetarian so a bit different to cat waste Smile

I've tried more than one tray but the weirdos insist on using the same one so Ive given up and only have one now!

Mine just use a basic open litter tray which I empty & clean using a no frills washing up liquid followed by a spray litter tray sanitizer which you leave in for 5 minutes & then rinse. I prefer lidl's clumping litter which is about 1.60 for a 10kg bag. I've got trays upstairs & downstairs with a bag of lidl litter on both floors with nappy sacks, litter scoops & litter freshener if needed. I put a deep layer in mine have always liked a good dig & have offcuts of old lino underneath.

@purdypuma we have also bought the Lidl litter and it’s fab! Absolutely no bits all over the floor and it’s doesn’t smell. At £1.60 a bag you can’t really complain.
