How often do you clean out your cats litter tray?

Just that really, how often do you?

We have 2 big male cats and 1 litter tray, mainly indoor cats and I’ve never seen them go to the loo outside.
I scoop the poop as soon as I see it, and do a total clear out once a week as it was starting to smell.

I’ve just cleaned it out and immediately both of them have gone and used it so I’m thinking maybe they didn’t want to go when it was so dirty? Should I be changing it more?

We use catsan litter if that makes a difference!

I do what you do -although fairly sure they do some business outside too. Ours doesn't smell when I empty it totally tho.
MadamCat uses the tray within seconds of me cleaning it, if only to force out the tiniest bit of wee possible. I assumed it was to do with scent?

Hopefulmidwife · 17/04/2020 10:44

I clean out poop when I know poop is in there; but it's checked daily. I clean it out completely weekly. My cat goes straight away too - he's either precious and likes it clean or maybe they do it as a way to mark their scent? This is my toilet sort of thing? I use wood litter, can be quite messy and I sweep all the time but I find it's so much better!

I have 2 indoor cats and two litter trays which I clean the poop out everyday and top up with litter. I have started using cats best litter which im finding not so messy and they seem to have taken to it, both fussy!

Want2beme · 17/04/2020 12:46

One litter tray each plus a pair is generally the rule. I clean mine every time they're used, but I have the shallow litter trays, not the big serious ones.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/04/2020 21:48

One tray for two cats must get a lot of use. Cats have got a good sense of smell too.

You can get self cleaning robotic ones now.

OhMy05 · 17/04/2020 21:54

One tray for one cat that I change completely every 48 hours.

She watches me when I clean it, and I always say to her repeatedly ‘who’s touching your poo?!’ 🤣 - must find me a hobby.

ofwarren · 17/04/2020 21:57

Scoop out poo straight away and throw away the whole litter probably twice a week or more if I feel it's stinky.

Bargebill19 · 17/04/2020 21:58

After every use. But I use newspaper. Four sheets nothing else in the tray.

Scabetty · 17/04/2020 21:59

2 cats, 2 trays. Clean out daily, change litter weekly. I use a fragranced litter which clumps so keeps smells away.

Papergirl1968 · 17/04/2020 21:59

Poop scoop daily and a complete change about once a week to ten days.
We have two trays for two days although one mainly goes outside.
They always have to go when the trays are cleaned. Always!
I saw the new robotic tray in the Argos catalogue (lockdown boredom!) They’re expensive! I’m intrigued as to how it works as I noticed it said safety sensors to tell if a cat goes back in or another cat enters while it’s cleaning.

slipperywhensparticus · 17/04/2020 22:01

3 cats three trays twice weekly but they are indoor cats they like to dive in while I'm pouring the clean stuff in

homemadecommunistrussia · 17/04/2020 22:01

Weeks go by. But it's an emergency back up, the kitty prefers to go al fresco. Grin

BovaryX · 17/04/2020 22:02

You should have more litter trays. Cats like to segregate their toilet and one cat will use two separate litter trays. One litter tray for two cats is not enough.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/04/2020 22:02

Complete change once every 3/4 weeks, but I use World's best cat litter and scoop daily.
They don't smell.

thaegumathteth · 17/04/2020 22:02

2 young male cats here and we scoop daily and change whole thing every other day

Bargebill19 · 17/04/2020 22:06

I’ve googled robot car trays. - my two would plot to kill that in about five minutes. !

janetmendoza · 17/04/2020 22:08

When I notice that it has gathered dust. We have had it and the cat for eleven years and he has never once used it. On the very odd occasion when he is particularly angry with us he has used the (human) toilet though.

delilabell · 17/04/2020 22:13

Two litter trays for one cat @BovaryX?
Also @bargebill how do you mean with newspaper?
Full clean out once a week. Poo removed every time we see (smell) it. Sometimes I scoop it out before delilacat has finished her very detailed scratch and cover. It makes her very annoyed!

FurForksSake · 17/04/2020 22:16

Remove poos, wash out sink each time it is used.

my git pisses in the utility room sink, he refuses to wee in the tray. No clue why it is ok for poo and not wee, even when fresh.

Elpheba · 17/04/2020 22:19

Complete litter change once a week- or 8/9 days if it’s not too full. Scoop poo daily but usually as soon as it’s done as they’re fairly regularly timed.
One tray for two kittens which I know isn’t ideal but it’s ok so far and we’re going to be encouraging them to go outside soon.

Bargebill19 · 17/04/2020 22:21

@delilabell
I have a letter tray - mine is a hooded one from pets at home with the door taken off - they do not like the door.
I just put four sheets of tabloid newspaper (most absorbent and they for perfectly.) loose in the tray like a very thin newspaper. Not shredded of anything. The cats hop in and do what they need, I then just dispose of the paper, disinfect (diluted flash or ecover) wipe dry and replace paper ready for the next use.
I have indoor cats. Even when they are outside they want the litter tray please.

Lua · 17/04/2020 22:22

Those of you that remove poo immediately...where do you remove to?
I don't really want to throw away multiple bin liners in a day...

Bargebill19 · 17/04/2020 22:24

You can use the compostable dog poo bags.

longtompot · 17/04/2020 22:24

Can I ask what litter people use in theirs. Up to now we've used Catsan, but recently I used a wood pellet one which seemed to be much better. No smell, dry tray and no ammonia when I cleaned it out. If you do use wood pellets, how high do you fill the tray as they do seem to swell quite a bit and turn to sawdust.

Papergirl1968 · 17/04/2020 22:25

I use kitchen roll or toilet roll to put in a little bag - I save sandwich bags and bread bags - and then usually just throw it outside back door. When I change the litter I put the dirty litter in a plastic bag, usually a bag for life, add the little bags of poo, tie the handles so none can come out, and drop it in the outside bin.
